Salvatore Pizzurro, also billed as Sal Pizzurro, is a Sicilian trombonist born in Montelepre in 1967. He graduated from the Conservatorio di Musica "Vincenzo Bellini" in Palermo in 1989 and has held the first trombone chair of the Orchestra Jazz Siciliana (OJS), the Brass Group Foundation's resident big band in Palermo, for most of his professional life. Discogs' own entry for him reads simply "Italian trombonist," and his Discogs artist identity (artist 1530148) is a single, unambiguous entity with no namesake conflict.
Per the Brass Group's own published biography of him, Pizzurro has performed under an unusually long list of visiting jazz conductors and composers across his OJS tenure: Bob Wilber (for the first Italian performance of Duke Ellington's Queen's Suite), Gil Evans, Archie Shepp, Bob Brookmeyer, Mel Lewis, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Paul Jeffrey, Ernie Wilkins, Sam Rivers, Francy Boland, Gunther Schuller (for the European premiere of Charles Mingus's Epitaph), Carla Bley, Pete Rugolo, Lester Bowie, Clark Terry and Natalie Cole. These are institutional, orchestra-wide guest credits from his own published biography rather than session-by-session discography entries, and this profile treats them accordingly: real and repeatedly published, but not each one independently confirmed at the personnel-credit level. He has also appeared at the jazz festivals of San Vito Lo Capo, Sanremo, Prague and Messina, and at the Palermo Vocal Festival in 1990.
One of those credits is independently confirmed on record. In May 1989, OJS recorded an entire album of Carla Bley's compositions at the Brass Group Jazz Club and Teatro Metropolitan in Palermo, released the following year on Bley's own ECM-distributed imprint as Plays the Music of Carla Bley (XtraWATT/4). Discogs' extraartists credits for the release name Pizzurro individually on trombone, alongside fellow Orchestra Jazz Siciliana trombonist Salvatore Pizzo - a distinct, separately Discogs-identified musician despite the similar surname - and guest artists Gary Valente and Steve Swallow; the album carries Jazz and Big Band/Contemporary Jazz genre and style tags.
Pizzurro reappears on a second Discogs-verified OJS recording nearly two decades later. On 2007's Music & Wine Live (Duplison), a live crossover project pairing the Donnafugata winery with the Brass Group and visiting American musicians Eliot Zigmund (drums) and Bill Moring (bass), Pizzurro is one of four credited trombonists, alongside Salvadore Nania, Salvatore Pizzo again and Valerio Barrale. The same release credits Antonino Pedone, Domenico Riina and Vito Giordano as the three arranger-conductors, and names Francesco Marchese and Gaspare Palazzolo among the saxophonists.
He is also Discogs-credited on trombone on Flora Faja's Italian Songs (2009, Philology), a song album featuring Fabrizio Bosso (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Francesco Cafiso (alto saxophone) as billed guests, with Gaspare Palazzolo again on tenor saxophone. Two further Discogs credits sit outside the OJS/jazz context: a single-track trombone credit on Sicilian singer-songwriter Mario Venuti's pop/Latin album Microclima (1996), and a trombone credit on the Palermo pop-folk group Bottega Retrò's Per il resto...Tuttapposto! (2013); both are reported here for completeness but are not part of Pizzurro's primary jazz identity.
In January 2018 Pizzurro released his own first album as a leader, Vieni Via con Me, with the full Orchestra Jazz Siciliana, arranged and directed by Antonino Pedone. Billed as "Sal Pizzurro & Orchestra Jazz Siciliana," the fifteen-track record has him singing and soloing on trombone through classics of the Italian songbook reset in a swing idiom; it was presented live at Palermo's Teatro di Santa Cecilia on 27 January 2018. The album is not catalogued on Discogs but is available on Spotify and Apple Music. No birth date more specific than his 1967 birth year, and no Wikipedia, AllMusic or All About Jazz entry, could be found for him.
Pizzurro's documented career runs almost entirely inside one institution, Palermo's Orchestra Jazz Siciliana, in the classic big-band trombone-section role: ensemble playing behind a long run of visiting American jazz composer-conductors, captured on record once in an avant-garde-adjacent big-band context (the Carla Bley album) and once in a Sicilian winery-sponsored live crossover project. His own 2018 leader album moves in a different, earlier register entirely, an Italian-songbook repertoire reset as big-band swing with Pizzurro himself out front as vocalist and trombone soloist, in keeping with a musical outlook he has described as spanning "from be-bop and Dixieland to swing," rooted in jazz's different historical periods. His handful of outside sideman credits, on a Sicilian pop record and a Palermo pop-folk group's album, sit outside that identity and are not part of his primary artistic profile.
Salvatore Pizzurro's Discogs artist entity (id 1530148, profile text "Italian trombonist") carries five individually credited releases, verified directly against each release's extraartists list via the Discogs API. He also leads one further album, Vieni Via con Me (2018), that is not catalogued on Discogs; it is listed separately below.
