Salvatore Pizzo is a Palermo trombonist who has spent his career inside the Orchestra Jazz Siciliana (OJS), the big band run by Palermo's Brass Group Foundation and, per the Foundation's own materials, Italy's first and only permanent jazz orchestra with public-institution backing. The orchestra traces back to the "Brass Group Big Band," founded by Ignazio Garsia in the early 1970s, under first stable conductor Tony Vella; it is now conducted by Domenico Riina.
The Brass Group's own institutional history names Pizzo among a specific group of eight musicians - Giuseppe Costa, Vito Giordano, Antonino Pedone, Pietro Pedone, Fabio Riina, Domenico Riina, Pizzo and Salvatore Pizzurro - who, in the Foundation's own words, "guaranteed for over twenty years an orchestral sound characterized by their own recognizable sound." The orchestra's current published staff roster lists Pizzo in its trombone section, alongside Salvatore Pizzurro, Salvatore Nania and bass trombonist Valerio Barrale. Pizzurro and Pizzo are two distinct musicians who happen to share a surname-adjacent billing in the same trombone section; this profile does not conflate them.
Four commercial recordings carrying Pizzo's trombone credit are independently confirmed at the Discogs level, spanning three different projects across two decades. The earliest, "Picture Number One" (1988, Splasc(h) Records), was recorded by the Costa & Cataldo Music Project, a duo led by bassist Giuseppe Costa and drummer Pippo Cataldo, featuring pianist Salvatore Bonafede; Pizzo plays trombone in its horn front line. The same year, he appears on trombone on track A3 of Cataldo's Sincronie (1988, C.R. Records) - an otherwise contemporary-classical commissioned work for strings and winds, on which track A3 alone breaks out a small jazz combo featuring Bonafede and Costa alongside Pizzo.
Pizzo's most notable credit came via the full orchestra: in May 1989, OJS recorded an entire album of Carla Bley's compositions, newly re-orchestrated for big band by Jeff Friedman, at Palermo's Brass Group Jazz Club and Teatro Metropolitan. Released the following year on Bley's own ECM-distributed XtraWATT label as Plays the Music of Carla Bley (1990), the personnel list credits Pizzo on trombone in the orchestra's brass section, alongside fellow OJS trombonist Salvatore Pizzurro and guest artist Gary Valente, also on trombone, with Antonino Pedone on baritone saxophone and Steve Swallow on bass. Nearly two decades later, Pizzo appears again on 2007's Music & Wine Live (Duplison), a Sicilian winery-and-orchestra crossover project pairing the Donnafugata label with the Brass Group and visiting American musicians Eliot Zigmund (drums) and Bill Moring (bass); he is credited on trombone alongside trombone-section colleagues Salvadore Nania, Salvatore Pizzurro and Valerio Barrale, saxophonists Pedone, Francesco Marchese and Gaspare Palazzolo, and arranger-conductors Pedone, Domenico Riina and Vito Giordano.
No birth date, birthplace or formal training history for Pizzo is publicly documented - not on Discogs, whose artist entry for him carries only the one-line profile text "Italian trombonist," and not on Wikipedia, AllMusic or All About Jazz, none of which lists him. His documented public record rests on the Brass Group's own institutional materials and his four Discogs-verified recording credits.
Pizzo's musical identity is that of a section trombonist inside a large working jazz orchestra rather than a soloist or leader with a catalog of his own. His four confirmed recordings place him squarely in the big-band and orchestral-jazz tradition OJS has built its identity on since the 1970s: a contemporary-jazz combo date ("Picture Number One"), a one-track jazz appearance inside an otherwise classical commission (Sincronie), and two full-orchestra big-band dates, one of them a significant international credit - OJS's ECM-distributed recording of Carla Bley's own compositions, on which the orchestra shared trombone duties with visiting American soloist Gary Valente. The Brass Group's own history singles Pizzo out, alongside seven section mates, as one of the players who gave the orchestra's sound its long-running, recognizable character across more than two decades.
Identity confirmed via live Discogs API call: artist ID 1530141 ("Salvatore Pizzo", profile text "Italian trombonist"), whose only listed Discogs groups are Orchestra Jazz Siciliana (id 1530150) and Costa & Cataldo Music Project (id 3181307) - no name-collision risk found; this is a single, unmerged Discogs entity. His personal Discogs artist page logs exactly four release-relationship credits, all role "Appearance," all independently fetched and confirmed at the extraartists level below. The great majority of Pizzo's documented musical activity is institutional, long-tenured membership in the Orchestra Jazz Siciliana's trombone section, covered in final-profile.md and in the second table below, rather than commercial discography.
