Luciano Biondini was born in Spoleto in 1971 and started serious accordion study at 10, winning major classical prizes including the Trophée Mondial de l'Accordéon and the Premio Internazionale di Castelfidardo. He then took a five-year break from music entirely. At 25, guitarist Valter Ferrero introduced him to jazz, and he has played it since 1994.

He has become one of Europe's leading accordion voices in contemporary jazz, working with Rabih Abou-Khalil, Michel Godard, Gabriele Mirabassi, Fabrizio Bosso, and Enrico Rava, all already profiled or connected within jazzprofiles.com. His longest-running duo partnership is with pianist Rita Marcotulli, also already profiled, documented on 2014's La Strada Invisibile (ACT Music). He has also worked extensively alongside saxophonist Javier Girotto, including Terra Madre (2005, Enja) and Iguazù (2011).

His own catalog spans duo, trio, and larger-ensemble records: Prima del Cuore (2007, Enja), the trio What Is There What Is Not (2011, Intakt, with Godard and Lucas Niggli), and the solo record Senza Fine (2015). He continued the Godard/Niggli trio into 2026 with Fables of Time.

Biondini's playing sits at the intersection of jazz improvisation, tango feel, and Mediterranean folk gesture, redefining the accordion's role within modern jazz through duo and trio contexts rather than a standard rhythm-section role.
