Gianpiero Carta is a Sardinian saxophonist and clarinetist who plays alto and soprano saxophone and clarinet in the Orchestra Jazz della Sardegna (OJS), the Sassari big band that started life in 1989 as the Blue Note Orchestra and has carried the OJS name since 1996. The orchestra's own site describes it as one of the rare Italian orchestras that has operated without interruption since its founding, and its musician roster lists Carta as "sax alto e soprano, clarinetto." Section mate Dante Casu plays alongside him, and founder and president Gavino Mele plays horn and directs the orchestra on its recent releases.

His earliest credit on record comes from the orchestra's collaboration with Giorgio Gaslini. Sacred Concert / Jazz Te Deum was recorded live on June 26 and 27, 2000 at the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Betlem in Sassari and issued on Soul Note in 2002. Discogs credits Carta on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, in a reed section that also includes Casu, tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Dorino Ruzzettu, tenor saxophonist Massimo Carboni and baritone saxophonist Paolo Carta Mantiglia. Paolo Fresu is the trumpet soloist, Maria Pia De Vito is one of five credited voices and Alessandro Zolo plays bass.

Two later orchestra releases name him in the reed section. On Bruno Tommaso's twelve-movement Jazz Requiem Mass (JazzOp, 2022) the orchestra's discography lists "Gian Piero Carta (as/cl)" between flutist Tony Chessa and tenor saxophonist Massimo Carboni, with Casu on bass clarinet, Mele on horn, and Zolo and Antonio Pitzoi in the rhythm section. On Domani è un altro giorno, the collaboration between the Sardinian band Bertas and the orchestra, he is listed on alto and soprano saxophone under Mele's direction, in a trumpet section that includes Francesco Lento. The album carries a Bertas catalog number dated 2025 on the orchestra's site and reached streaming services on January 19, 2026.

Away from the orchestra, Carta works in smaller jazz settings around Sardinia. In August 2020 he was the clarinetist in the Vilsait Jazz Band, a New Orleans-style brass and percussion group formed by trombonist Salvatore Moraccini and saxophonist Marco Maiore, which played 1920s Dixieland standards at the In Itinere 2020 series in Tempio. He has also been the saxophonist in Ensemble Laborintus for Un mistero nero, a Billie Holiday tribute with vocalist Rossella Faa and narrator Mariantonietta Azzu, presented at the Teatro Verdi in Sassari; Antonio Pitzoi played guitar and Luca Piana drums in that lineup. He also plays saxophone and clarinet in the sextet backing the vocal-and-piano duo Almacanta (Zaira Zingone and Graziano Solinas), which has appeared at the JazzAlguer festival in Alghero.

Outside jazz, Discogs credits him with saxophones on Michele Pieraccini's pop album In Volo (2005, Ichnosound), including soprano and tenor saxophone solos on "Io Scrivo Di Te." No leader release under his own name, birth date, birthplace or training history is publicly documented.

Carta is a reed player in the large-ensemble tradition. His documented work is section playing, alto and soprano saxophone with clarinet doubling, inside an eighteen-piece orchestra built on standard big-band sections, and the orchestra's own site describes a repertoire spanning swing, contemporary jazz, fusion, Italian song, world music and classical-contemporary work. That range is visible in his own credits: a live recording of a sacred-jazz work in a Sassari church, the reed section of a Requiem composed for the orchestra, and a collaboration with the Sardinian band Bertas.

His smaller-group appearances lean on the clarinet and the older jazz vocabulary. The Vilsait Jazz Band plays Dixieland repertoire, the Laborintus show is built around Billie Holiday's songbook, and Almacanta moves between tango, blues, American ballad and bossa.
