Tal Ronen is an Israeli double bassist born in Tel Aviv in 1981, based in New York City since the mid-2000s. He attended the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts and the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and served his Israeli Army duty as a bassist in the Army Jazz ensemble. He moved to New York and earned a BFA, Magna Cum Laude, from the City College of New York in 2009, studying along the way with bassist John Patitucci, and received early encouragement from jazz educator Arnie Lawrence.

Ronen's most visible recurring credit is as the bassist in vocalist Catherine Russell's band. Russell, a Grammy-nominated interpreter of vintage American songbook, blues and R&B repertoire, features Ronen on three consecutive studio albums for Dot Time Records: Harlem on My Mind (2016), Alone Together (2019) and Send For Me (2022), each nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. He is also the longtime bassist and a credited songwriting collaborator for guitarist and vocalist Dida Pelled, appearing on her 2010 Red Records debut Plays and Sings - which also features trumpeter Roy Hargrove and drummer Gregory Hutchinson - and her 2016 single "A Missing Shade of Blue."

Beyond those two headline associations, Ronen is a steady presence in New York's traditional and mainstream-swing jazz circuit. He is a regular member of the EarRegulars, the collective that has held down Sunday nights at the Ear Inn, a historic Soho tavern-turned-jazz-room at 326 Spring Street, since 2007, alongside musicians including trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso and guitarist Matt Munisteri (the group released a live album on Arbors Records in 2023). He also leads his own trio and quartet dates at Mezzrow, the intimate Greenwich Village club, frequently with singer Tamar Korn, pianist Dalton Ridenhour and guitarist Josh Dunn. Writing after a December 2023 Mezzrow set, jazz historian Michael Steinman (Jazz Lives) called Ronen "a truly eloquent bassist, whose solos have the passion and shape we associate with horn players," adding "Perhaps the history books haven't caught up to him yet." Ronen's own artist biography (published by Smalls Jazz Club and the America-Israel Cultural Foundation) additionally credits him with sideman work alongside saxophonist Frank Wess, drummer Jimmy Cobb, pianist Harry Whitaker and vocalist Sheila Jordan, and regular appearances at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Village Vanguard, Iridium and the Kitano; these self-reported credits are carried here as his own long-stated professional biography rather than independently discography-verified, see notes.md.

Ronen's discography also runs consistently through Israel. In 2005 he played bass on saxophonist Alon Farber's debut as leader of the Hagiga Quintet, Exposure (Fresh Sound New Talent), a session that also features trumpeter Avishai Cohen - the trumpeter, not the better-known bassist of the same name - as a guest. He has also been the constant bassist in drummer Dani Benedikt's trio since the two first played together inside Hagiga around 2002, through Benedikt's 2011 leader debut, Dani Benedikt Trio Featuring Anat Fort & Tal Ronen (with pianist Anat Fort), a 2023 EP and a 2024 live session under a shrunk-down trio banner. Other credits include drummer Dan Aran's 2009 Smalls Records album Breathing (splitting the bass chair with Matt Brewer), pianist Arik Strauss's 2012 trio record Mostly Ballads (Dot Time Records), singer Hetty Kate's 2011 EP Kissing Bug, and later sideman dates with reedman Evan Arntzen (Countermelody, 2021, Dot Time Records), singer Sweet Megg and singer Hannah Gill. No commercially released album under Ronen's own name as leader was found; his own trio and quartet exist as an active live billing at Smalls and Mezzrow rather than a recording project to date, see notes.md.

Ronen's playing sits squarely in the swinging, songbook-rooted wing of mainstream jazz: a walking, time-keeping bassist equally at home backing a vocalist's phrasing (Catherine Russell, Dida Pelled, Hetty Kate, Sweet Megg, Hannah Gill) and driving small trad-leaning combos (the EarRegulars, his own Mezzrow dates). Critic Michael Steinman's description of his solos as having "the passion and shape we associate with horn players" points to a melodic, songful approach rather than a purely functional one. His Israeli-side credits (Alon Farber's Hagiga Quintet, the Dani Benedikt Trio, Arik Strauss's ballad-focused trio record) sit closer to a straight-ahead post-bop language, showing a bassist comfortable moving between the two related but distinct idioms.
