Spiritual jazz emerged in the mid-to-late 1960s as an extension of John Coltrane's late modal and free playing, which fused improvisation with explicitly religious or meditative intent, and was carried forward after his 1967 death by his widow, harpist and pianist Alice Coltrane, and saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. It is characterized by modal, often droning harmonic frameworks, incantatory or chant-like vocal and instrumental textures, and the incorporation of non-Western instruments such as the harp, tambura, and African and Indian percussion. John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane, and Pharoah Sanders remain its defining figures.
