June Yun (윤여준) is a vocalist and composer who was born in South Korea, grew up in London, and now works between New York and Berlin. She is billed as June Yun on her album and on Discogs; the Apple Music copyright line for the album gives the name Yeo Jun Yun, and a Korean press preview from October 2023 prints her Korean name as 윤여준. Her own Bandcamp biography calls her a vocalist and composer from Seoul. Neither a birth date nor a birth city is published in the sources found.
According to an LA Jazz Scene review and a 2024 feature in the Croatian daily Novi list, she moved to the United Kingdom at the age of five and grew up in London, where her father, an architect, introduced her to classical music. She then went back to Korea to study songwriting in pop and R&B. A Korean press preview says that in 2016 she took part in a project of KBS Radio and Dreambrothers, singing with Park Seung-hwa (박승화) of the duo Yuri Sangja (유리상자). LA Jazz Scene adds that the collaboration went well but left her unfulfilled, and that she then left for New York to study jazz.
She arrived in New York in 2017. The Korean preview says she entered the jazz program of The New School on a scholarship, received the school's John Coltrane Award in 2020, finished her BFA that year, and earned a jazz master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music in May 2022. In the Novi list feature she names Dr. Richard Harper, a multi-instrumentalist and educator at The New School, as her main mentor, and says she has taught music for about eight years. Her biographies list appearances at Dizzy's Club at Lincoln Center, Smalls Jazz Club, the John Tishman Auditorium and Mercury Lounge; the Korean preview adds that at Dizzy's she performed with the trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and the Charles Mingus Big Band. A Jazz Views review lists Jean Baylor, Joel Ross, Ingrid Jensen, Theo Bleckmann and Shai Maestro among the musicians she has played with. These appearances come from her own and promotional biographies and were not otherwise confirmed.
Her first album, Enlightenment - Solid Waves, came out on October 27, 2023, self-released with the support of the label SORI-E NAITE Music Company (Sori-e Naite Music Company, SNMC0079 on Discogs). Discogs and Apple Music list nine tracks, a short intro among them, and the album is billed as eight original pieces; the music and words are hers, and she arranged and produced it. The central idea is that light and dark coexist and circulate rather than stay in one place. She told Novi list that she wrote the songs over about three years, that the project grew from a search for her own identity and voice after moving to New York, and that making music is a kind of therapy. The band is the pianist Shai Maestro, the bassist Kanoa Mendenhall and the drummer Jongkuk Kim, billed as JK Kim, with the Slovenian vibraphonist Vid Jamnik on five tracks, the guitarist Brad Kang on two and the alto saxophonist Nicola Caminiti on two. Drummer Jongkuk Kim is profiled on JazzProfiles.com as a South Korean drummer from Incheon who works in New York. Alex Conroy recorded the album at Bunker Studio, Jeremy Loucas mixed and mastered it, and the cover is a collage by the architect Seung-Hong Park, with Yun responsible for the design.
The record drew notice from several outlets. Nick Lea reviewed it for Jazz Views on February 1, 2024 and called it a strong, personal debut in which she sings as part of the ensemble and uses spoken word and wordless vocals alongside lyrics. An unsigned review in LA Jazz Scene's February 2024 issue found it ethereal and somewhat meditative, with appealing singing and lively post-bop playing, and called it a promising debut. Dan McClenaghan's All About Jazz review of July 23, 2024 describes thematically cohesive, atmospheric writing, and hears something of Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones in the lyrics of the opening track, "Little Mighty Soul". A Slovenian listing says the album was also featured on RTV Slovenia's Jazz Ars All Stars.
Korea has been part of her working life since the album. K스피릿 reported on October 3, 2023 that she would tour South Korea for two months, opening on October 4 at Sound Stella in Seoul under the title Finding PARADOX vol.1, visiting Daegu, Busan, Gwangju and Jeonju, and ending on November 18 in Seoul with a duo project with the drummer Hwan Yoo. Vid Jamnik was announced for every date. The opening-night band named in the article was Kang Jae-hoon on piano, Ryu Hyung-gon on bass, Seo Su-jin on drums and Song Jun-ho on guitar, and the Seoul release show was announced with Yong-ri on piano, Jeon Chang-min on bass, Seok Da-yeon on drums and Song Jun-ho on guitar. The same article says she had given a small Korea tour in January 2023, and that a second album was previewed in the Finding PARADOX program.
In Berlin she leads oollim (울림, a Korean word for resonance or echo), a trio of voice, vibraphone and double bass with Vid Jamnik and the bassist Gal Golob. Listings describe a repertoire of jazz standards in original arrangements, Korean traditional and folk music, contemporary jazz and her own compositions, and show the trio booked for dates in Slovenia and Austria in July 2026.
Little else is published about her career. Discogs holds one release under her name, and no recordings as a sideman were found.
Her Bandcamp biography names jazz, classical music, R&B, Korean traditional music and pop as her influences. In the Novi list feature she lists jazz vocalists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, classical composers, musical theatre and K-pop, and calls Shai Maestro a major inspiration for the debut album. In an interview with Jorge Ceja Moran she said she composes mainly at the piano and writes lyrics only when a piece seems to need them, and described the New York scene as the place where she met a modern sound unlike traditional swing.
On the album, the wordless singing, the spoken-word affirmation "Solid Waves" and the vibraphone and piano textures keep the voice close to the instruments. Her Korean tour program Purple Sounds is a different side: her own arrangements of pieces by Keith Jarrett, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, Horace Silver, Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson. Her early training in pop and R&B songwriting in Korea is a side note to a career that is now centred on jazz with classical and Korean traditional touches.
