Acid jazz emerged in London's club and DJ scene during the late 1980s, when DJs and bands began blending 1970s jazz-funk, soul jazz, and Latin grooves with dance-club beats, sampling, and hip-hop-influenced production. Musically it favors deep grooves, prominent bass and drums, and a strong debt to instrumental soul jazz over extended improvisation. The style is closely associated with London DJ and label figure Gilles Peterson, and with bands such as the Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai who popularized the sound commercially in the early 1990s.
