Satoshi Bandoh (坂東慧, Bandō Satoshi) is the drummer of T-Square, the Tokyo fusion band formed in 1976 under the name The Square. He was born on 19 August 1983 in Osaka Prefecture, joined the band at the end of 2004 at the age of 21, and has held the drum chair ever since; English Wikipedia calls him the group's longest-tenured drummer. He is also a composer and arranger, and a solo project of his, BANDOBAND, has produced three albums of his own music.
He grew up playing the Electone, the Yamaha electronic organ, and took up the drums at eight. He attended Osaka Prefectural Sakurazuka High School. Japanese Wikipedia and a retailer's artist profile name three teachers: Katsuhiko Kawase, Kozo Suganuma and Neil Sorensen. In 2005, the year after he joined T-Square, he took part in the Zildjian Day event at the Music Fair (楽器フェア) with the drummer Simon Phillips and with Suganuma, and the retailer's profile says Phillips praised his playing.
The way in was a session. In 2004, at a Roppongi Pit Inn session he joined on Suganuma's introduction, he played with the keyboardist Keizoh Kawano, who was then T-Square's support keyboardist. On 4 June 2004 he appeared as an extra in T-Square's guest spot on the TV Asahi programme Tamori Club, called in, according to Japanese Wikipedia, because Hiroyuki Noritake, the band's drummer since 1985, could not make the schedule. He then guested on the Groove Globe tour, and at the end of 2004 he and Kawano both became official members. Japanese Wikipedia adds that he played from memory at his first session with the band, that the guitarist Masahiro Andoh and the saxophonist Takeshi Itoh were impressed, and that Itoh asked the producer to recruit him.
His first album with the band was Passion Flower (Village Records, 20 April 2005). Discogs credits him on drums on the studio albums that followed, among them 33 (2007), Wings (2012), Paradise (2015), Treasure Hunter (2016), Rebirth (2017) and Horizon (2019), with Andoh on guitar, Itoh on saxophone and EWI, and Kawano on keyboards, and it lists him on the T-Square Super Band anniversary albums Wonderful Days (2008) and Smile (2013). In 2018 he was on the 40th-anniversary concert recording It's a Wonderful Life!.
When Andoh left the band in February 2021, Bandoh and Itoh carried it forward. Discogs credits both of them as producers of Wish (Orange Lady, 18 May 2022), and on Vento de Felicidade (31 May 2023), the band's 50th studio album, he shares the drum credit with Noritake. The lineup credited on Voyage, released on 3 June 2026, is Itoh, the bassist Shingo Tanaka, the keyboardist Yuichi Hasegawa, the guitarist Shuya Kameyama and Bandoh.
His own albums are Happy Life! (Village Records VRCL-4016, 13 July 2011), Let's Move! (Village Records VRCL 4028, 12 June 2013) and Step By Step! (Orange Lady OLCH-10005, 29 June 2016). Discogs credits him as composer, arranger and producer of all three, and the retailer's profile says he wrote and arranged every track. Discogs files all three under Jazz with the styles Fusion and Smooth Jazz. Step By Step! came as a Super Audio CD with a DVD that carries a video for "Headin' to Laguna Beach" and his own liner-note commentary.
Away from T-Square he is a recurring drummer in Dimension, the fusion band of the guitarist Takashi Masuzaki: Discogs lists him on ten of its numbered albums (23 to 30, 33 and 34), beside the saxophonist Kazuki Katsuta. He is on the Mario Kart 8 soundtrack (2015), in the Mario Kart Band with Noritake, and on the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (2008) and Gran Turismo 5 (2010) soundtracks. His credits on other artists' records include Koji Kikkawa's 傷だらけのダイヤモンド (2009), Love Psychedelico's Love Your Love (2017), Little Glee Monster's Bright New World (2020) and Gradati∞n (2021), Kozo Suganuma's Drum Paradise (2018) and four albums with the singer Grace Mahya between 2006 and 2008. Japanese Wikipedia also lists tour support for Dreams Come True, May J., Senri Oe, the Gospellers, COMPLEX and others.
He also teaches in public: Shimamura Gakki, the instrument retailer, has advertised his drum seminars at its stores, including one at its Lake Town branch on 8 August 2026 and a further date in Sendai in January 2027. He turned 43 in August 2026.
Bandoh plays the kind of fusion drumming T-Square built its catalogue on: bright, precise and melodic, with the kit serving the guitar, keyboard and saxophone lines rather than competing with them. He came to the job as a composer as well as a drummer. The Electone gave him a keyboard background, Japanese Wikipedia lists keyboards as his second instrument, and the retailer's profile presents his writing and arranging as a strength in its own right. His three solo albums are the clearest evidence: every track is his own writing and arrangement.
His teachers sit on both sides of the Japanese drumming world. Three teachers are named in his biographies, Katsuhiko Kawase, Kozo Suganuma and Neil Sorensen, and in 2005 he performed with Suganuma and the drummer Simon Phillips at Zildjian Day.
Not all of his work is jazz. Alongside the fusion albums, Discogs lists him on pop and rock sessions for Koji Kikkawa, Love Psychedelico and Little Glee Monster, and on game music including Mario Kart 8 and Gran Turismo 5. His identity is nevertheless fusion: Discogs files his own albums and the T-Square catalogue under Fusion, he has been the drummer of Japan's best-known fusion band since 2004, and English Wikipedia counts twelve Japan Gold Disc Awards for the band, the most recent for Fly! Fly! Fly! and Wish.
