Stride piano developed in Harlem during the 1920s and 1930s as a virtuosic outgrowth of ragtime, in which the pianist's left hand alternates a low bass note with a mid-range chord in a rapid striding pattern while the right hand improvises melodically. It is distinguished from ragtime by its greater rhythmic drive, harmonic sophistication, and reliance on improvisation rather than fully notated composition. James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, and Willie The Lion Smith are its most important and closely associated pioneers.
