Trad jazz (short for traditional jazz) refers to the British and European revival, beginning in the 1940s and peaking in popularity through the late 1950s and early 1960s, of early New Orleans-style and Dixieland jazz, distinguishing itself from the swing and modern bebop dominating jazz at the time. It is defined by its adherence to the collective, polyphonic front-line improvisation and two-beat rhythmic feel of 1920s New Orleans jazz. British bandleaders Ken Colyer, Chris Barber, and clarinetist Acker Bilk were central to the revival's popularity.
