Dixieland developed in New Orleans in the 1900s and 1910s and was carried to national prominence after 1917 by transplanted New Orleans musicians in Chicago and New York, later enjoying a traditionalist revival in the 1930s and 1940s. It is defined by collective, polyphonic improvisation among a front line of trumpet, clarinet, and trombone over a two-beat rhythm section, rather than the solo-centered improvisation of later jazz styles. The Original Dixieland Jass Band, cornetist King Oliver, and the young Louis Armstrong were central to establishing the style.
