Time Grove is a Tel Aviv studio ensemble of nine musicians, assembled by the producer and keyboardist Rejoicer (Yuval Havkin) and guided musically by the pianist Nitai Hershkovits. It began as a recording series rather than a band. Havkin runs the Tel Aviv label Raw Tapes, and in 2014 he opened a sublabel, Time Grove Selections, whose stated premise was a run of sessions in which he would host one jazz musician at a time and build a record around that player's instrument and listening. The imprint's own description calls it a series of meetings between leading jazz musicians and Rejoicer, with the meeting of freestyle jazz with electronic sound and groove as the point of the exercise.

Four albums came out of that arrangement between 2014 and 2017, each built around a different player: Beats, Not Words by the drummer Aviv Cohen, who records as Sol Monk, in November 2014; Saved My Eyes From Tears, co-credited to the reed player Eyal Talmudi and the drummer Roy Chen, in 2015; Hershkovits's own debut I Asked You A Question in 2016; and Beyond The Things I Know by the trumpeter Sefi Zisling in 2017. Two more, Hod Moshonov's The Chase After Tomorrow and Gilad Abro's Leaf Boy, sit on the imprint's own Bandcamp page and are absent from Discogs entirely.

The band called Time Grove is what happened when the session guests stopped rotating and started playing together. Nine musicians make up the group: Hershkovits on piano, Rejoicer on synthesizers and drum programming, Talmudi on tenor saxophone, clarinet and flute, Zisling on trumpet, Yonatan Albalak on guitar and bass, Hod Moshonov (who records as Bemet) on piano, Rhodes and keytar, and three drummers who divide the record between them, Aviv Cohen, Amir Bresler and Roy Chen. Almost nobody plays on everything. Rejoicer is the one exception, present on all eleven pieces, and Hershkovits is on ten of them; the saxophone and trumpet chairs come and go; each of the three drummers takes a different set of tracks, and the ney player Itzhak Ventura appears once, on "Indopia."

Their only album, More Than One Thing, was released digitally on Raw Tapes on September 28, 2018, produced by Rejoicer and Hershkovits and mixed by Rejoicer. The UK label Wah Wah 45s picked it up for physical release, putting out a double A-side 7-inch of "Roy The King" and "Sir Blunt" in October 2018 as an advance single and the LP and CD across 2018 and 2019. The single drew airplay from Huey Morgan on BBC 6 Music, Tim Garcia on Jazz FM and Tina Edwards on Worldwide FM.

The titles are local and specific. "Roy The King" is named for Roy Chen, the drummer on it, who was given the nickname by the band. "Latrun" takes its name from the hilltop overlooking the Tel Aviv to Jerusalem road where fighting took place in 1948. "Second Attention" borrows a term for a shamanic state of awareness. The sleeve, a human head tethered like a balloon, was drawn by Rebecca Larios.

The group did not follow the album up. Several of its members carried the same idea forward instead: Hershkovits, Rejoicer, Bresler and Albalak formed Apifera in 2017 and signed to Stones Throw Records, and Apifera's own account of its origins dates the band to the Time Grove sessions of 2014 onward.

Time Grove works a seam that its own label copy describes as the thin line between jazz and electronics, and the balance is unusual in that the jazz half is played rather than sampled. The writing is built on acoustic instruments, piano, tenor saxophone, clarinet, flute, trumpet, bass and a drum kit, with Rejoicer's synthesizers and programming laid underneath as texture instead of as the lead voice. Nitai Hershkovits's piano is the constant across the record, and the three-drummer arrangement is a compositional decision rather than a scheduling one, since each drummer's tracks sound different from the others'. All About Jazz, reviewing More Than One Thing, described a noirish opening of jagged saxophone and prowling keys, heard "Sir Blunt" as an astral jazz broadcast from a wonky satellite, and called the album the sound of something lasting. Electronic Sound magazine wrote that the group moulds a big band sound into flexible shapes. The Middle Eastern colour that surfaces on "Indopia," through Itzhak Ventura's ney, is the exception rather than the method: most of the record's non-jazz vocabulary comes from beat production rather than from folk material.
