Alon Oleartchik is best known as a co-founder, writer, and singer in Kaveret (also known as Poogy), widely considered Israel's most popular rock band. Born in Warsaw, Poland, to songwriter Edward Oleartchik, he trained in classical piano as a child, then enlisted in the Israeli army's Nahal band in 1968, meeting Danny Sanderson, Meir Fenigstein, Ephraim Shamir, and Gidi Gov there, the group that became Kaveret when it formed in 1973.

His musical roots are in jazz, not rock. Before Kaveret existed, Oleartchik was the bassist for Platina, Israel's first band built around original jazz composition, which toured America and played the Newport Jazz Festival in 1972. After Kaveret's initial run ended in 1976, he studied composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston in the late 1970s, then stayed in New York, active in the city's Lower East Side avant-garde jazz scene.

That thread resurfaced in 1999. After a run of concerts with the Tel Aviv Big Band, he released Oleartchik Jazz (NMC), a session crediting saxophonist Eli Degibri, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, and pianist Yonathan Avishai, all three now profiled elsewhere on jazzprofiles.com, years before any of them became defining names in Israeli jazz internationally.

Oleartchik's dominant body of work sits in Hebrew rock and pop, built across a career running from 1969 through 2025. His jazz relevance is biographical and formative rather than an ongoing stylistic identity: a genuine jazz apprenticeship (Platina, Newport, Berklee, New York's avant-garde scene) that shaped a bassist before he became a rock icon, and one return to the genre on record in 1999.
