Hamilton de Holanda Vasconcelos Neto was born March 30, 1976, in Rio de Janeiro into a musical household, and moved with his family to Brasília, Brazil's capital, while still a child. He started on the melodica at four, was given a mandolin by his grandfather at five, and by six was performing publicly — his first appearance came on Fantástico, Brazil's national Sunday-night television program, in 1982, in front of an audience of more than 50 million. With his brother Fernando César he formed an early duo, Dois de Ouro, cutting his teeth on stage well before most musicians finish grade school. He later earned a university diploma in composition, grounding the prodigy's ear in formal technique alongside the street-corner, jam-session education of Brasília's choro scene.

Choro — Brazil's older, instrumental, largely improvised popular-music tradition, sometimes described as jazz's Brazilian cousin — is the ground de Holanda has never left, even as he pulled it toward the vocabulary of contemporary jazz. In 2000 he remade the instrument itself: the traditional Brazilian bandolim carries eight strings tuned in four courses, the same scheme as an Italian mandolin. De Holanda added a fifth course of two strings tuned to low C, extending the instrument's range downward and giving it, in his own words, "a deeper voice." The change wasn't just about range. Players and critics who've written about the innovation describe an instrument that, on a standard 8-string bandolim, produces notes with very little sustain — the tight, high-tension stringing chokes them off almost as soon as they're struck. De Holanda spent years after the redesign developing a technique — a mix of tremolo control, left-hand phrasing, and physical approach to the strings — that let notes hang and resonate closer to the way they would on a guitar, effectively giving the reinvented instrument a legato voice it never had. The American press, encountering that combination of range and sustain live, took to calling him the "Jimi Hendrix of bandolim." He later composed a suite of 24 Caprices for the instrument, released as the 2014 album Caprichos — a direct, and clearly deliberate, echo of Paganini's 24 Caprices for solo violin, and as thorough a technical and compositional statement as any mandolin player has made for the instrument in any tradition.

De Holanda has built as much institutionally as he's built as a performer. In 1997, alongside collaborators in Brasília, he co-founded what's described as the world's first dedicated Choro School, formalizing the oral, apprenticeship-based way the music had always been taught. He later petitioned Brazil's National Congress on the music's behalf, and in 2000 a presidential proclamation made April 23 the country's official Dia Nacional do Choro — National Day of Choro. He has taught at the Escola de Choro Raphael Rabello in Brasília. Alongside the teaching and advocacy, he tours as a philanthropist as much as a headliner: he organizes and plays benefit concerts for ABRACE, a Brazilian childhood-cancer charity, and for music programs serving disadvantaged youth.

The collaborator list that has built up around de Holanda's touring and recording career is unusually deep even by the standards of in-demand instrumentalists. The clearest, most documented instance is 2013's Mundo de Pixinguinha, a tribute to the foundational choro composer Pixinguinha built explicitly as a showcase for jazz musicians improvising over his tunes: Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés, French accordionist Richard Galliano, and American trumpeter Wynton Marsalis all recorded on it, alongside de Holanda's regular collaborator André Mehmari. "I thought it would be an opportunity for the music of Pixinguinha to be played by jazz musicians who know about improvisation," de Holanda told NPR at the time. Milton Nascimento appears as a guest vocalist — alongside singer Alcione — on 2017's Casa de Bituca, the Hamilton de Holanda Quinteto's tribute to Nascimento's own songbook. He has performed live with Wynton Marsalis's quartet (an Edinburgh International Festival date in August 2024 drew particular notice for the two trading fours), with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and — per his own official biography — with Chick Corea and the Dave Matthews Band. A 2010/2011 tribute album with pianist André Mehmari, Gismontipascoal, is built entirely from the compositions of Egberto Gismonti and Hermeto Pascoal — both cited by de Holanda as major influences — though no recording or documented shared stage with Gismonti or Pascoal themselves turned up in this pass; the connection to those two names runs through the repertoire, not a joint performance. A widely repeated claim that he has "recorded or shared stages with" Béla Fleck and the Flecktones could not be pinned to a specific date, recording, or bill in this research pass and should be treated as unconfirmed until a primary source turns up.

His discography now runs past two dozen releases as leader, co-leader, and featured member of his own Quinteto and Trio, spanning Brazilian independent labels, EMI/Adventure Music, ECM (the 2013 Stefano Bollani duo record O Que Será), and, most recently, Sony Music Brasil. He is a four-time-plus Latin Grammy winner: Samba de Chico won Best Instrumental Album at the 2016 ceremony, Maxixe Samba Groove (released 2021) won the same category at the 2022 ceremony, Tembla with Venezuela's C4 Trío won it again at the 2024 ceremony, and Hamilton de Holanda Trio – Live in NYC won Best Latin Jazz/Jazz Album at the 2025 ceremony. Brazilian press reported the 2025 win as his fifth Latin Grammy statuette overall and the first time a Brazilian artist had won a Latin Grammy in a "general," non-Portuguese-language-restricted category. Collab, his 2024 duo record with three-time Grammy winner Gonzalo Rubalcaba, earned his first nomination at the U.S. Grammy Awards, for Best Latin Jazz Album at the 2025 ceremony. Across seventeen-plus nominations and a catalog still growing — NOVA landed in 2026 — de Holanda remains the instrument's defining modern voice.

De Holanda's playing sits at the intersection of two traditions he refuses to treat as separate: the melodic, harmonically dense vocabulary of Brazilian choro — built on the repertoire of Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, and João Gilberto — and the improvisational freedom of contemporary jazz, drawn from listening to Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and Pat Metheny alongside Brazilian modernists Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal, and Milton Nascimento. That dual inheritance is inseparable from his physical relationship to his instrument: because he rebuilt the bandolim itself, extending its range and coaxing a sustain out of it that the traditional 8-string design never had, his phrasing can move between rapid-fire tremolo runs rooted in choro technique and long, held, guitar-like melodic lines more associated with jazz horn or piano lines. The result is a sound simultaneously rooted (he has spent as much of his career preserving and teaching choro as playing it) and outward-facing — equally comfortable leading his own Quinteto through a Milton Nascimento songbook, trading choruses with a jazz pianist on an ECM date, or reworking Venezuelan llanero string music with C4 Trío.
