Anthony John Pinciotti sat down behind a drum kit at two years old and was working professionally across the Midwest by thirteen, backing Motown players and regional jazz musicians, the trumpeter Marcus Belgrave among them. At sixteen he came to the attention of the multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan, who in 1992 asked him to move to Miami and take the drum chair in his band. The Florida years put him alongside Pat Metheny, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Andy LaVerne, Frank Foster and Warren Bernhardt while he was still in his teens. A full music scholarship took him to the University of Miami, but he stayed only briefly.

In 1994 he moved to Chicago, where he became a first call for touring leaders passing through and led groups of his own drawing on members of the AACM and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. His earliest documented studio work comes from those years and is easy to miss: he plays percussion on one track, "The Inner Soul Of H," of Rob Mazurek's Chicago Underground Orchestra album Playground, cut at Idful Studios in March 1996 and January 1997 and issued by Delmark in February 1998 with Chad Taylor in the drum chair. He also appears on the singer Bradley Williams's Up On A Jazz Top (Oakley Records, 1997) and on a 1996 Chicago Musical Revue cast recording of Showboat.

He moved to New York in 1998 and spent the next twenty-six years as one of the city's most reliably called drummers. His first substantial record date came in May 2003, when James Moody brought him into Avatar Studios for Homage, released on Savoy Jazz the following year; Pinciotti plays eight of its eleven tracks, sharing the chair with Billy Kilson. From there he built a long association with the Danish label SteepleChase, which recorded him more than a dozen times: four albums with the guitarist Vic Juris (whose Sunday trio with bassist Jay Anderson held a no-cover 7 p.m. slot at the 55 Bar), three volumes of Andy LaVerne's One Of A Kind live at the Kitano, dates with Ari Ambrose, Russ Spiegel and the bassist and cellist Mike Richmond, and in 2017 his own co-led trio record. He also made Nuance: The Bennett Studio Sessions with pianist Lynne Arriale, Randy Brecker and George Mraz in August 2008, and in Mraz's last years he was the drummer in the bassist's trio with his wife, the pianist Camilla Mraz.

Three working bands defined his later career. He joined the cornetist John McNeil's quartet Hush Point for its second and third albums, Blues And Reds (Sunnyside, 2014) and Hush Point III (2017), a pianoless group with Jeremy Udden on alto and Aryeh Kobrinsky on bass. From roughly 2015 he was the drummer in Spike Wilner's trio, a partnership that produced Koan (2016), Odalisque (2017), Aliens & Wizards (2021), Contrafactus (2024) and The Children & The Warlock (2025), and that ran in parallel with a standing trio at Mezzrow with bassist Paul Gill that played twenty-four listed nights between December 2022 and September 2024. And in August 2016 he took the drum chair in the ten-piece Anat Cohen Tentet, playing on both of its albums: Happy Song (Anzic Records, 2017) and Triple Helix (Anzic Records, 2019), the latter nominated for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards. Its centerpiece is a three-movement suite Oded Lev-Ari wrote on a joint commission from Carnegie Hall and Chicago's Symphony Center.

In his final decade he was also the singer Stacey Kent's drummer, touring internationally with her and recording Summer Me, Winter Me (2023), and he held a regular Brooklyn seat at Bar Bayeux with saxophonist Adam Kolker and bassist Jeremy Stratton. He led his own quartet or trio at Smalls on thirteen billed nights between June 2009 and July 2024, and was billed as leader on a London date in the Vortex Jazz Club's Jazz Travellers series. He taught at New York University, the City University of New York and the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, gave clinics and master classes abroad, and ran a separate practice of healing drum sessions and sonic meditations. He had just finished a Malaysian tour and his annual December run with Kent at Birdland, and had a European tour booked for the following March, when he passed away suddenly on December 24, 2024, at forty-nine. He was survived by his wife of thirty years, Annette Tacconelli, and their son Salvatore.

Pinciotti's standing among New York drummers rested on a quality that is hard to point at on a record: he made bands sound better without making himself audible as a soloist. Vinnie Sperrazza, writing on January 6, 2025, put the working musician's version of it plainly, that if Pinciotti was on the gig, no questions were asked. In practice that meant a light, singing cymbal beat, brushwork used as a melodic instrument rather than a texture, and an unusual willingness to leave space: on Vic Juris's reading of Carla Bley's "Floater" he works almost entirely in gongs, bells, cymbal rolls and rattles. He admired Gary Peacock's Tales Of Another and the Jack DeJohnette playing on it, and something of that record's open, non-hierarchical rhythm section carried into his own work. He was also, unusually for a jazz musician of his generation, not a conservatory product: he left the University of Miami after a short stay and learned on bandstands in Toledo, Miami and Chicago instead, which Sperrazza identified as the source of a musical vocabulary that did not sound borrowed. His range ran from the free-leaning Chicago groups he led in the mid-1990s to the stride and standards repertoire of the Spike Wilner Trio and the through-composed large-ensemble writing of the Anat Cohen Tentet, and he was equally convincing at both ends.
