Zohar Fresco plays a frame drum. One skin stretched over a wooden hoop, held up in the air and struck with the fingers, an instrument that predates the drum kit by several thousand years. He has built an entire career on it, including three double-platinum records in Poland.

He was 21 when he joined Bustan Abraham in 1991. The band had been founded that year by Avshalom Farjun on qanun and Taiseer Elias on oud, and it put Jewish and Arab musicians in a single working group at a time when almost nobody in Israel was doing that. Miguel Herstein played guitar and banjo, Nassim Dakwar violin, Amir Milstein flute, Yehuda Siliki baglama, Emmanuel Mann double bass. Fresco held the percussion chair for the band's entire life, five studio albums between 1992 and 2000, from the self-titled debut through Hamsa. Ross Daly, the Crete-based lyra player, guested on Abadai (1996). Zakir Hussain and Hariprasad Chaurasia, two of the leading figures in Indian classical music, both guested on Fanar (1997). The band stopped in 2003, and a quartet version recorded live once more in 2013.

In July 2004, at the eleventh edition of Jazz in the Old Town, a free open-air jazz festival held every summer in the historic square at the center of Warsaw, the Polish pianist Leszek Możdżer assembled a band for a single night. He took the Swedish double bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson. For the third chair he did not hire a drummer; he hired Fresco. The one-night booking became a permanent trio. Their debut, The Time, came out in September 2005 on the Polish label Outside Music and was certified double platinum in Poland within two months, and the trio played a Platinum Concert at the Polish Baltic Philharmonic in Gdańsk on December 15, 2005. Between Us and the Light reached the same certification two weeks after its November 2006 release. Polska did it again in 2013. Three jazz records, no drum kit on any of them.

The trio has kept moving since. Just Ignore It (2021) added the Dutch period-instrument orchestra Holland Baroque, recorded at Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum. Beamo toured Poland in November 2024 and got an international release on March 28, 2025, with Możdżer playing three grand pianos at three different tunings: one at the modern A = 440 Hz, one at A = 432 Hz, and one decaphonic.

Alongside all of that runs a session ledger most listeners have already heard without knowing it. Discogs carries 172 releases under Fresco's name, of which six are his own. He plays percussion on track eleven of Avishai Cohen's Sensitive Hours (2008), the bassist's Hebrew-language album. He runs through Achinoam Nini's catalog from her 1993 debut with Gil Dor onward, including Blue Touches Blue, the 2000 record Pat Metheny produced. He is on Ofra Haza's Kol Haneshama (1994), the Idan Raichel Project's Within My Walls (2008), Matisyahu's Spark Seeker (2012), and Lars Danielsson's Liberetto II (ACT, 2014), where the credit reads percussion, vocals, special guest. Berry Sakharof, Yehudit Ravitz, Arik Einstein, David Broza, Ara Dinkjian and Ross Daly all appear in the same list.

He also has a documented free-jazz night on the record. In March 2007 the American drummer Hamid Drake had roughly 24 hours free between a concert with the William Parker Quartet and another with Anthony Braxton. Assif Tsahar brought him to Levontin 7, the Tel Aviv club Tsahar co-founded, and put him on a bill with Fresco. All About Jazz reviewed the set; during the encore Tsahar started alone on tenor, waved the other two in, and the piece ended with Fresco throwing Middle Eastern scales at Drake from the darbuka and making him answer.

The family has been in this music for a long time. Fresco's own school biography traces his line back to Tanburi Isak Fresco Romano, born in the Ortaköy district of Istanbul in 1745, a synagogue cantor who taught the tanbur, the long-necked Ottoman lute, at the imperial palace, and whose students included Sultan Selim III; the school of tanbur playing he founded was handed down through generations of Ottoman court musicians after his death in 1814. Two hundred and eighty years later his descendant has done something structurally similar with a different instrument. Fresco built his own fingering technique for the tof miriam and named the musical language that came out of it Manegina. He teaches it through the Zohar Fresco School in groups of eight to ten students, and he documented it alone, with no band, on Tof Miriam in October 2015.

Fresco is a frame drum specialist rather than a drummer who also owns a frame drum, and the distinction is the whole point of his catalog. In the Możdżer Danielsson Fresco trio he occupies the chair a drum kit would normally fill and does the kit's structural job with one hand-played skin, which is why those records sound unlike other European piano trios. Wikipedia files him under both Israeli percussionists and jazz percussionists, and lists his genres as world music, ethno jazz and jazz; he is not a straight-ahead player and has never presented himself as one.

His vocabulary comes out of Middle Eastern and Ottoman practice, maqam-based and rhythmically dense, and it stayed intact when he moved into jazz contexts rather than being smoothed toward a swing feel. Manegina, the fingering system and musical language he built and named for the tof miriam, is the formal statement of that approach, and Tof Miriam (2015) is its unaccompanied demonstration. Bustan Abraham was the earlier institutional version of the same idea: Middle Eastern scales and Arab and Jewish players inside a fixed working band with a rehearsal schedule, rather than as a guest-star gesture.
