Berry Sakharof is not a jazz musician. Known as "the prince of Israeli rock," he was born July 7, 1957 in İzmir, Turkey, and his family immigrated to Israel when he was 3. He started performing at 16 in the band Cosmic Dream alongside Rami Fortis, and after his military service moved to Belgium to become a founding member of the post-punk band Minimal Compact, the first Israeli rock act to find real success outside Israel. The band released six albums on Crammed Discs before breaking up in 1988.
Back in Israel, Sakharof resumed working with Rami Fortis and built a long solo career, releasing albums as both a rock artist and a collaborator, including Signs of Weakness with multi-instrumentalist/producer Rea Mochiach (chosen the 11th-best Israeli album of all time in a Ynet readers' poll), and She Appeared Like the Wind (2017), a full album of Ladino songs recorded with Ehud Banai.
Sakharof's music runs through rock, post-punk, and alternative rock, shaped by his Minimal Compact years in Belgium and a long solo career that has moved between hard rock, more introspective songwriting, and cross-genre projects like the Ladino-language She Appeared Like the Wind.
