Bertrand Noël is a French drummer and composer whose recorded work runs from a Bordeaux jazz sextet of the mid-2000s to a duo record with the Israeli pianist Yonathan Avishai and a long run of French chanson and world-music sessions. The Bibliothèque nationale de France maintains an authority record for him (ark:/12148/cb16254936t) that describes him in the library's own words as a "batteur de jazz et pop-rock," gives his nationality as French and his birthplace as Paris, and records no birth year at all, only "19..". His own biography, published on his website while it was live, opens differently: it says he took up drums at eleven and calls him "originaire de Bordeaux," and a 2018 Bordeaux concert listing describes him as a "batteur bordelais" who had been living in Paris for some years. Both statements can be true, and neither source gives a year. He studied in New York at the Drummers Collective, where he took the school's Advanced Certificate Program diploma, then based his working life in Paris.

His first documented band was Grand Six, a Bordeaux sextet assembled by the guitarist, composer and instrument-builder known as Monsieur Gadou. Jazz Magazine's Bordeaux correspondent, writing in September 2013, dates the group's founding to the 2000s "or a little before" and names its lineup: Noël on drums, Timo C. Metzemakers on bass, Yoann Loustalot on trumpet and flugelhorn, Victor Michaud on French horn and Guillaume "Doc" Thomachot on alto and soprano saxophone, with Gadou on guitar. The sextet played the Bordeaux Jazz Festival under Philippe Méziat's direction in 2002 and 2005 but, by the same account, never toured much. It left one album, De la Jungle, recorded in November 2006 at the Studio du Moulin by engineer Jacques Hermet, mixed at the Studio Berduquet by Metzemakers and issued by Le Petit Label. Noël is not just the drummer on it: he co-wrote five of the nine pieces with Gadou, including "Le léopard endormi," "Expédition," "La grande chasse au tigre," "Le Maharadjah et sa suite" and "Le singe téméraire." Reviewing the record for Citizen Jazz, Sophie Chambon described a six-piece band that sounds like a whole orchestra, "explosive and yet melodic," and closed by pointing out that Gadou had written the material jointly with the drummer.

The record Noël is best known for is The Lost Boys, the piano-and-drums duo album he made with Yonathan Avishai. The two recorded it over three days from June 16, 2009 at the Studio Alhambra-Colbert in Rochefort-sur-Mer, and Cristal Records, based in La Rochelle and distributed by Harmonia Mundi, issued it on October 7, 2010 as CR 156; the sleeve carries a 2009 phonogram line naming Noël and Avishai as its producers alongside the label, and a 2010 copyright. Avishai Cohen, the trumpeter, guests on three of the eight tracks and contributes the opening piece. Noël wrote "La Désirade" and brought "Le léopard endormi" across from the Grand Six book. The BnF catalogues the album under the genre "jazz," and it stands as Avishai's first record as a leader. The pair billed themselves the Noël Avishai Duo and played the Paris Jazz Club Festival at the Sunside on October 19, 2010. Cristal later lifted "Le léopard endormi" onto its two-disc Jazz Ballads anthology, whose second disc was compiled by Fred Migeon, placing the duo alongside Sophia Domancich, Jean-Pierre Mas and David Reinhardt on a set whose first disc, compiled by the France Musique producer Claude Carrière, runs from Ben Webster to Duke Ellington.

Away from jazz, Noël has worked steadily as a session and stage drummer in French chanson, rock and Caribbean music. His credits include Marc Delmas's Bloody Mary (Cristal Records, 2007), on which he plays drums, percussion and glockenspiel, Aurélie Ramel's Passeurs (2007), Lawrence Collins's Acoustronika (2012), two Eskelina albums for L'Atelier du Pélican, Le Matin du Pélican (2015) and La Verticale (2017), the vocal jazz group Allegriazz's Tout Va Bien (2015), the Haitian saxophonist Thurgot Théodat's Badji 2 (2017) and Daniel Jea's L'homme d'à côté (2018), where he is credited with drums and an SPD-SX electronic pad. He holds the drum chair on the Haitian singer Moonlight Benjamin's Siltane (Ma Case, 2017), the voodoo-rock record that took her onto international stages, alongside Matthis Pascaud on guitar, Marc-Richard Mirand on bass and Claude Saturne on percussion. One credit sits outside every category: he and Avishai both appear on Maurice Moncozet's medieval anthology Chants de troubadours: pas e camins (Trob'art / Tròba vox TRO28, 2012), recorded in stages between 2008 and 2012 and known only from the BnF catalogue, not from any discography database.

By 2018 he was leading his own groups in Bordeaux. A Bertrand Noel 4tet played Le Caillou du Jardin Botanique on April 13, 2018 with Christophe Marroye on guitar, Alain Coyral on saxophone and Nicolas Mirande on bass; a Bertrand Noel trio returned to the same room on December 22 that year, billed as "jazz pop-électrique," with Marroye and bassist Nicolas Veisseyre, playing what the venue described as his own jazz compositions with a touch of electronics. His website, still up in 2019, listed stage and studio work with Avishai, Avishai Cohen, Moonlight Benjamin, Pauline Croze, Eskelina, Franck Monnet, Ernest Saint-Laurent and Marlène Freitas Monteiro; Cristal Records' artist page adds Alain Goldstein, appearances at the Bordeaux Jazz Festival and Paris Plage, and work as a substitute drummer for Cirque du Soleil. That site has since gone offline, and no performance or recording after 2018 could be documented for this profile.

Noël's playing is documented mostly through the company he keeps, and the company is consistent: small groups that prize melody and shape over volume. Cristal Records described The Lost Boys as "une musique étonnamment paisible, d'une forte douceur," a duo in which piano and drums take their time meeting each other, and the drums on it function as a second melodic voice rather than a timekeeping floor. Grand Six pulled him in the opposite direction, toward what Citizen Jazz heard as a music of "brass bands, circus and chamber music," with the shades of Ellington and Charles Mingus hanging over it, and there his contribution was as much compositional as percussive. His own account of himself, written for his website, refuses the split: he describes a conviction that all musical genres can talk to each other, and a playing style drawn from the tradition of the great jazz drummers together with electronic music, funk and rock. The 2018 trio, jazz composition run through electronics, is that statement put into practice.
