Sarang You (유사랑, written Yu Sa-rang in some Korean sources) is a jazz vocalist and songwriter from Seoul's club scene. Korean Wikipedia and Wikidata give her birth date as February 3, 1984, and Korean Wikipedia gives Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang, as her birthplace; in a 2022 interview she calls Gyeongju her hometown. Her real name is Yu Bong-in (유봉인): the Herald's arts site HOOC reported in 2015 that she had worked under it since 2010, and Newsis wrote that she was better known by it before her first album. Just before that album she took the name Yu Sa-rang, which she said came from advice around her and from a faith she had recently found, and which she reads as "love You." She spells it You rather than Yoo, and her releases, her YouTube channel and Apple Music credit her as Sarang You. The same Hangul name is used on streaming services for a younger K-pop singer in the girl group izna; the two are unrelated.

She wanted to sing from her teens. In the notes to her 2024 album she says her musical life began with Korean traditional music, with chang singing and samulnori percussion in her childhood and school years. She told Newsis she found jazz in her late twenties, and told OhmyNews that a nine-minute video of Ella Fitzgerald scatting felt like fate. Gyeongju offered little jazz, she said, so while she was teaching at a practical-music academy she emailed the singer Woongsan to ask for lessons (she dates this to 2005 in one interview and 2006 in another) and began studying with her in 2006. Newsis adds that she was in Busan when she saw a video of Woongsan, wrote to her, was given a phone number and moved to Seoul to learn. She then sang backing vocals in Woongsan's band for a long stretch, and the drummer Park Cheol-woo (박철우), who plays on her first album, is someone she met through that band. Korean Wikipedia lists a bachelor's degree in practical music from Chugye University for the Arts, and in 2022 she said that teachers including Malo guided her while she was in school. Her named influences are Fitzgerald and the Korean singers Youn Sun Nah, Malo and Woongsan, "especially Woongsan," she told Newsis. These links come from her own interviews, not from a joint recording.

From 2010 she worked the Seoul jazz clubs as Yu Bong-in, and two recorded appearances date from 2012. She is the vocalist of the jazz band Playhouse (플레이하우스), whose first album Woo-A-E came out on July 26, 2012; its label text names the pianist Choi Hyeon-u (최현우), the trumpeter Song Hyeong-jin (송형진), the bassist Ahn Geon-sik (안건식), a drummer credited as Kim Sang-hyeon (김상현) and the vocalist Yu Bong-in. That appears to be the 2012 album that Newsis and her label call "Quartet Playhouse." The same autumn she sang the guest vocal on "Amazing Grace" on Wish, an album by the piano trio Gentle Rain, led by the drummer Dukwon Seo; streaming services list it as "feat. Yu Sa-rang" on the full album (October 25, 2012) and "feat. Yu Bong-in" on its Part 2 release (October 9, 2012). The magazine Jazz People named her a Rising Star for 2014, and her label's notes for her first album add that she had played the Jarasum and Chilpo jazz festivals.

My Way, her first album under her own name, came out on Sony Music Korea on August 27, 2015, with a streaming reissue dated October 16, 2015. It has nine tracks, five of them her own songs by her account to Newsis, and she took part in the arrangements of every track except "Simba," which the bassist James Lee wrote at her request and which is named after her cat. She told Newsis she handled the booking of the musicians and the sleeve design herself. Her label's notes name Song Ji-hoon (송지훈, the pianist of Gentle Rain), the bassist Oh Jeong-taek (오정택) and Park Cheol-woo as the rhythm section, and the producer Pyo Chang-hun (표창훈), who had worked on Woongsan's third album. The press heard it as unusually pop-leaning for a Korean jazz record: HOOC found "pop sounds and melodies" in place of complicated harmony and rhythm, and the album sets a standard, "Mean to Me," beside originals that include "Tonight," which she wrote in memory of her mother, and an "Amazing Grace" arranged together with the folk song "Arirang." The title song was written at a low point around 2013 and 2014; her label's later notes say it reached third on a jazz chart on release and the year's top ten, a claim no chart source found confirms. A release concert was announced for November 22, 2015, at the Hongdae club AMP, with Song Ji-hoon, Oh Jeong-taek, the guitarist Kim Gi-jung (김기중), the saxophonist Bae Seong-il (배성일), a drummer billed as Dee Anthony (디 안토니) and the accordionist Park Sang-min (박상민).

The following years are mostly features and singles. Playhouse's second album Living (August 17, 2017, Mirrorball Music) credits "Voice, Chorus" to Yu Sa-rang. In June 2019 she released Let Me Cry, a five-track set (three songs and two instrumentals) that her label calls her first Christian music (CCM) release: it includes her own song "Let Me Cry" and arrangements of two hymns, and it sits outside her jazz work. The label notes for her later EP say she won the grand prize in the jazz division of the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards in 2019; no independent record of that award turned up. Pretend to Be Okay (괜찮은척), a four-track EP released on December 11, 2021, carries her own "Pretend to Be Okay" and "Friend Friend," a song by the writer Lee Heon-seok, and a setting by the bassist Lee James of a poem by Yun Dong-ju, with Oh Jeong-taek as producer; Apple Music files it under pop and Bugs under jazz vocal. In September 2022 she told OhmyNews that she had performed in Los Angeles and Arizona that June and had a folk-jazz album in progress with Korean traditional musicians. Audience videos of her singing "My Way" at the Daegu International Jazz Festival are online.

From late 2022 she took part in the Green Jazz Movement, an environmental song series produced by Woongsan and the composer Jami Soul. On November 25, 2022, she was one of eleven singers on its opening single, "Be the Light" (빛이 되어주오), alongside Maria Kim, Nam Yeji and Park Raon, and on December 14, 2022, the series issued her own entry, "Whale in a City" (도시의 고래야), whose words, music and arrangement are credited to her. A video titled for the 2023 Seoul Jazz Festa has her singing it with the Green Jazz Movement Friends on Nodeul Island. "Shining" followed on March 27, 2023, sung with Daewon Lee (이대원) and Lee Ju-mi (이주미) on a song by Maria Kim and Jami Soul. On June 19, 2023, she sang "The Truth of Life" (삶의 진리) on What a Wonderful World: A Tribute to Kim Jun, an album produced by Woongsan that is built on songs by the first-generation singer Kim Jun and on which Discogs lists her. That year she is also credited on Daewon Lee's debut album Precious One, whose notes say she, Woongsan, Maria Kim and another singer took part in writing songs for it, and as the featured singer on the drummer Park Ga-eul's singles "I only need you" (2023) and "Saudade" (2024). In October 2023 she released "LA LA LAND," a dance-pop single produced by Jami Soul that she describes as her attempt at an easy song for any listener after thirteen years as a jazz singer.

Sae Jip Da Oh (새집다오), her second album, followed on October 24, 2024, nine years after the first. It has seven tracks and joins jazz to Korean material: the Jeju folk song "Nuh young nah young" (너영 나영), "Byul dal guh ri" (별달거리), "Dokdo" and a live "Arirang." Besides a jazz rhythm section it credits Park Song-i (박송이) on daegeum bamboo flute and Kim Ji-hye (김지혜) on janggu drum, and the saxophonist Garrett Becwar on one track. She says the pieces were the ones audiences liked best at her shows abroad. Her most recent credit found is as co-composer, with Lee Heon-seok, of the rock band Weatherboat's single "My Love Alabama" (내사랑 알라바마, April 28, 2025), a song the Mike One Project had released in 2021. No source found covers 2016 to 2018 beyond the Living credit.

She is a pop-leaning jazz singer who writes her own songs. Newsis's interviewer heard a girlish ballad voice, a bluesy and sexy voice and a bright, lovable voice on one record, and she herself said she has no single signature tone and chose to show all of her sides. HOOC heard pop sound and melody on My Way under a voice that is "clearly" a jazz voice. On stage she sings many standards, while her albums favor original songs, she says, because her own songs express her feelings best. Her stated view of the genre is that jazz is a culture rather than a fixed form: what matters is who plays a song rather than which song it is, and improvisation makes the same tune different every night.

Her catalog has three sides. The Seoul jazz work is My Way, the Green Jazz Movement songs and the band records with Playhouse and Gentle Rain. The Christian EP Let Me Cry and the dance-pop single "LA LA LAND" sit nearer worship music and pop. Sae Jip Da Oh is her turn toward Korean traditional music, which she describes as the first chapter of her life, and sets her jazz singing beside folk songs and traditional instruments. Bugs and Apple Music file most of her releases under jazz, and Bugs lists her debut as 2015 with jazz as her genre, so this profile treats her as a jazz vocalist whose own albums lean toward pop and Korean folk fusion.
