Moeun Son (손모은) is a violinist, composer and arranger born in 1992 in Daegu, South Korea, who has lived and worked in Paris since 2012. She is billed Moeun Son in the credits of her own releases, on her website and on Discogs. The group she formed in 2019 was called Son Moeun Project, with her family name first in the Korean manner, and since 2025 her band has been billed MOEUN. Her day and month of birth are not published.

Her Korean basis is real but is mostly a matter of birth and schooling. Her biography says she studied piano and then violin from early childhood in Daegu and played as a soloist with the Daegu String Orchestra and the Keimyung Symphony Orchestra before she left. Her jazz career has taken place entirely in France, with Korean concerts and Korean press attention continuing alongside it. No source found states which passport she holds.

She moved to France in 2012 to continue her studies. Her biography names Dominique Pifarély and Jasser Haj Youssef as her jazz violin teachers and Laurent Korcia as her classical teacher. She holds a jazz diploma from the Conservatoire de Boulogne-Billancourt (2015), a French state teaching diploma (2019) and a classical violin diploma from the École Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot (2021). When the website CultureJazz reviewed her in 2022, it wrote that she had come to Paris about ten years earlier to deepen her violin playing and her jazz, after discovering the freer approach of Stéphane Grappelli, and that improvisation had opened another world to her.

She formed Son Moeun Project in 2019 with the pianist Dexter Goldberg, the guitarist Galindo Cuadra, the double bassist Florent Allirot and the drummer Gabriel Ferrari. In 2022 she took the composition prize at the Trophées du Sunside, the competition of the Paris club Sunset-Sunside, and her own biography adds a second prize in the soloist category. The single "Daybreak" came out on March 25, 2022, and the album Intérieurs followed in the autumn (September 30 on Bandcamp, October 11 on Apple Music). It holds ten of her compositions and is built around the quintet, with the violinist Lisa Murcia, the cellist Dima Tsypkin and Théo Fuhrer-Imbert on clarinet and bass clarinet as guests. She produced it herself; Joël Fajerman engineered it and Matthieu Metzger mixed and mastered it. Her Bandcamp notes describe a fusion of classical, jazz and traditional music, and CultureJazz, hearing the same music live with the extra violin and cello, picked out chamber-music classicism, Latin colors, folk, pop and Breton touches.

Radio and television followed. Radio France's France Musique recorded the band at the Théâtre de l'Alliance Française in Paris on February 25, 2023 and again on February 17, 2024, and published "Song of Us" and "Oiseau migrateur" from those concerts. FIP's Club Jazzafip had her as a guest, TSF Jazz filmed a session of "Nuit d'été en Corée," and a Korean arts television programme, 열린예술무대 뒤란, broadcast the band playing "La danse" (the video is dated October 27, 2023). Two live singles, "Reflet" (February 2024) and "Nuit d'été en Corée" (March 2024), were issued with the original line-up, and the cultural site Cult reviewed, in March 2024, a concert at the club 38 Riv with the pianist Julian Leprince-Caetano in the band.

The 2024 Concours National de Jazz de La Défense put her in front of a wider audience. Six groups played the festival stage on June 26 and 27, 2024, and the jury gave the main prize (5,000 euros of professional support) to Roman Reidid X Paper Chase and the instrumentalist prize (1,500 euros) to her, in an announcement from the department of Hauts-de-Seine dated June 29. Korean coverage calls her the first Korean to win the performer award. Sports Kyunghyang adds that it came 25 years after the vocalist Youn Sun Nah, whom the article names Na Yoon-sun, took the jury's special prize at the same competition.

From 2025 she worked under the name MOEUN with a new line-up. Her biography lists Dexter Goldberg on piano, Romain Habert on guitar, Julia Richard on double bass and Wadie Naim on drums and percussion, while the Jazzlive listing for the band's Duc des Lombards date names Elaine Beaumont on bass and Gabriel Ferrari on drums, so the rhythm chairs have moved between players. The EP Cinq notes roses (three tracks, September 23, 2025) is listed on her website as a trio recording. The second album, Murmures d'après, was released on September 18, 2026 with eight tracks. Sports Kyunghyang describes it as taking a more audience-friendly, pop-like approach to her own stories, and notes that the title means "whispers afterward" in Korean. Her website listed a Korean tour for the album, with dates on September 11 in Jeonju, September 12 in Daegu and September 13 in Seoul, and a Korean ticketing listing for the Daegu show names two Korean guest players, the bassist Hyunkyu Kim (김현규) and the drummer Jonghyun Kim (김종현). A release concert at the Sunside in Paris is listed for November 10, 2026.

Beyond her own releases, Discogs lists two appearances: violin on Red Gold Rush (SuperCali, 2023), an electronic indie-pop album by Batz whose strings were recorded in Paris in June 2022, and violin on "Survivor" in the soundtrack of the video-game expansion Lies of P: Overture. Her biography also names Paolo Fresu, Serge Forté and Paul Anthony Romero among the musicians she has worked with.

In February 2026 she also joined the trio of the Seoul pianist Heean Ko for Connection, a project album billed Koheean Trio X Son Moeun on Apple Music and Bugs. The label text says the two sides first met two years earlier, rehearsed separately in Seoul and Paris and recorded all eight tracks in three hours in the summer of 2025, while she was in Korea for concerts. The album's songs mostly take environmental themes, and a Jazz Docent newsletter of April 2026 wrote that the violin's color carries both Korea and France and that it takes a moment to notice the violin among the trio.

Her own biography places her in an impressionist strain of jazz, and the Korean press compares her recordings to French Impressionist painting and to art films with a French sensibility. Cult's review of the concert at 38 Riv describes "Reflet" opening with a light guitar riff, after which the bow, the double bass and the piano enter one at a time. On Intérieurs the quintet is sometimes enlarged to a chamber group with a second violin, a cello and a clarinet.

The violin is her way into improvisation. CultureJazz traced her interest in jazz to Stéphane Grappelli's playing, and the Jazzlive host who introduced her at the Duc des Lombards began by noting how rarely a violin turns up in jazz at all. Her training is in classical technique as much as in jazz, and her catalogue crosses the border often: Latin, folk and pop colors in 2022, a turn toward song-like accessibility with Murmures d'après. Her working life is in the jazz world: the Paris clubs Duc des Lombards, Sunset-Sunside and 38 Riv, the La Défense competition, the Sunside trophies and the jazz programmes of French public radio.
