Paolo Passalacqua is a Sicilian jazz pianist who holds a permanent-term teaching post in jazz piano at the Conservatorio di Musica "Antonio Scontrino" in Trapani. His professional life runs almost entirely on two tracks outside the recording studio: teaching, and leading a working jazz trio around Sicily's club and festival circuit.

The Paolo Passalacqua Trio grew out of a piano-and-double-bass partnership with bassist Giuseppe Pipitone, described in Sicilian press coverage as built on strong artistic rapport, melodic taste and spontaneous interplay. The duo later expanded into a stable trio with drummer Giuseppe Nuccio. An earlier version of the group, documented directly in the Conservatorio "F. Cilea" of Reggio Calabria's own 2017 concert-season listing, paired Passalacqua on piano and Pipitone on electric bass with drummer Davide Ragazzoni for an October 12, 2017 concert that included two Passalacqua originals, "To Bill Evans" and "Ostinato," alongside jazz standards.

The current trio's repertoire spans, in the group's own description, "mainstream" jazz through bebop and hard bop to modern jazz, reworking standards alongside original compositions. It has performed regularly at the Blue Brass Jazz Club in the Ridotto dello Spasimo, one of Palermo's historic jazz venues, including an April 7, 2026 date covered by the Giornale di Sicilia, PalermoToday and Mobmagazine, all of which described the group's playing in glowing terms. In August 2026, the same trio premiered a new, self-composed project titled "Dialoghi Sonori" ("Sonic Dialogues") at Villa Genna in Marsala, part of that town's 'A Scurata festival; Passalacqua has described the piece as autobiographical, with each composition telling part of his own story.

Passalacqua is also listed on the roster of the Orchestra Jazz Siciliana (OJS), the Palermo big band run by the Brass Group Foundation and, per the Foundation's own materials, Italy's only permanent jazz orchestra with public-institution backing. His listing there carries an asterisk marking him as "additionally signed" rather than a full-time chair holder, and no Discogs-documented recording with the orchestra was found for him. He has also appeared as a guest on "By Night Jazz," a Palermo jazz radio program hosted by Marco Girgenti Meli.

Passalacqua's commercially released studio discography, by contrast, is extremely thin and lies outside jazz entirely. Discogs documents exactly two credits under his name, both as a sideman pianist on Sicilian pop recordings for the Velut Luna label: grand piano on singer-songwriter Ninni Arini's Se Il Mare... Un Oceano Di Carte (2010), and arranging plus grand piano on a single track, a cover of an Edoardo Bennato song, on the various-artists compilation Sketches of Memories (2011). Neither release documents his jazz work, which is recorded in concert listings, institutional rosters and regional press rather than in a personal studio catalogue.

Passalacqua's own titling points to a direct reference point: his original composition "To Bill Evans" is a stated tribute to the pianist. His trio's stated repertoire range, from mainstream jazz through bebop and hard bop to modern jazz, and its emphasis on interplay and dialogue between musicians, place him in a mainstream-to-postbop piano trio tradition built around reworked standards and original writing rather than a single fixed style. His 2026 project "Dialoghi Sonori" marks a turn toward more personal, narrative composition within that same trio format.

Most of what is documented about Passalacqua comes from concert listings, a conservatory faculty page, a big-band roster and regional Sicilian press rather than from commercial recordings; his reputation, on the evidence available, rests on the bandstand and in the classroom rather than in a discography.

Live and Institutional Record (Not Individually Discogs-Documented)

The following is drawn from a conservatory faculty page, a big-band roster page, concert listings and regional Sicilian press, not from Discogs release credits. It is listed here for completeness, not as a discography in the Discogs-verified sense used above. None of these engagements was found as a commercial release on Discogs.

Both Discogs-verified credits above are sideman piano appearances on Sicilian pop recordings for the Velut Luna label, not jazz records, and are documented here for completeness rather than presented as representative of Passalacqua's jazz work.
