Veronika Morscher was born in Bregenz on June 1, 1991 and grew up in Lauterach, in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. She began singing lessons at fourteen and studied voice with Aja Zischg-Eberle at the Jazzseminar Dornbirn. In 2007, at sixteen, she was among the winners of the Marianne Mendt Jazzfestival in St. Pölten, the Austrian competition for young jazz musicians, and her reading of "Night and Day" was recorded for the festival CD. She took her Matura at the Bundesgymnasium Blumenstraße in Bregenz in 2009 and left for Boston, where she studied jazz voice at the Berklee College of Music and completed her bachelor's degree in autumn 2012. She then returned to Europe for two master's degrees, at the Konservatorium Privatuniversität Wien and at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, and afterwards took a BSc in psychology at the University of Cologne and an MSc at Maastricht University. Between 2014 and 2018 she also trained as a certified yoga teacher (BYO/EUY).

Her first album under her own name came out of the Boston years. My Heart On A String was recorded at Wellspring Studios in Acton, Massachusetts in April 2013 with a band drawn largely from her Berklee circle: Irish saxophonist Matthew Halpin, guitarist Mike Bono, pianist Christian Li, bassist Jared Henderson, percussionist Sergio Martinez, drummer Roberto Giaquinto, and Anna Talpe on background vocals. Every song was hers, and she produced the record herself; it was released in June 2014 on the SESSION imprint of HGBS in Villingen, with the final engineering done at the old MPS studio there. A second date with Halpin followed a year later. Billed as The Owl Ones, Shadow Loves the Sun was cut live in April 2015 in a Cologne piano shop, Schoke Flügel & Piano, with the musicians playing without headphones and two pianists splitting the eleven tracks between them: Kit Downes on six, Pablo Held on five.

Morscher moved to Cologne in 2015 and has worked there as a freelance singer and teacher since. From 2014 to 2016 she sang first soprano in the Bundesjazzorchester, Germany's federal youth jazz orchestra, appearing on its 2016 Double Moon album Groove And The Abstract Truth under artistic director Niels Klein. It was in the BuJazzO that she met Sabeth Pérez, Laura Totenhagen and Rebekka Salomea Ziegler, and in 2015 the four founded the vocal group Of Cabbages and Kings, taking their name from Lewis Carroll's "The Walrus and the Carpenter." The group began as a septet with a rhythm section and has sung entirely a cappella since 2017, setting texts by Shakespeare, Ingeborg Bachmann, Erich Kästner, Wilhelm Busch and Hannah Arendt to arrangements the four singers write themselves. They placed third in the Sparda Jazz Award in May 2016, reached the final of the Leipzig international a cappella competition in 2017, took second place at the tenth European Young Jazz Prize in Burghausen in spring 2018 and second again at the Tampere Vocal Music Festival in Finland in June 2019. Their debut Aura, recorded in March 2018 with the founding four, was presented on Klaeng Records that December, by which point Zola Mennenöh had taken Pérez's place. Mennenöh left in March 2023, and the group has since released the trio album Yes And. (2023) and the EP Commissioned Works (2024) with Irish singer Lauren Kinsella.

Awards followed in quick succession. In 2017 she shared the Kulturpreis des Landes Vorarlberg with Fabio Devigilli, Andreas Broger, Benjamin Omerzell, David Soyza, Johannes Bär and Martin Grabher, and took a separate recognition prize at the same ceremony for her composition "River, Show No Mercy." On May 31, 2019, at the closing concert of the tenth Jazzfest Bonn, she became the first recipient of that festival's newly created Förderpreis, worth a 1,500 euro production subsidy and a 500 euro monthly stipend for three months; jury member Ralf Dombrowski cited her distinctive artistic ideas and musicality. Her sideman work through these years stayed inside the Cologne scene and its orbit: two records with pianist Pablo Held, Ascent (2020, Edition Records) and Adventures (2022), the latter with the EOS Chamber Orchestra; the Bertram Burkert Quartett's Das Suchen Nach Der Eignen Welt (2017), for which she also wrote a lyric; trombonist Peter Hedrich's New Hope (2018) alongside Jiggs Whigham; and Matthew Halpin's Agreements (2021), where she, Ziegler and Totenhagen sing the closing track "Sleep."

The largest project of her career so far was a commission from saxophonist and composer Heiner Schmitz. Tales From The Wooden Kingdom, recorded September 24 to 26, 2021 in the Deutschlandfunk chamber music hall in Cologne and released on Klaeng Records in April 2022, sets Schmitz's writing for the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra against Morscher as the sole voice; she wrote the lyrics for five of the eleven pieces and co-composed the closing "Winter Poem." The album was nominated for the Deutscher Jazzpreis in 2023 in the Best Vocal Album category. Her second album of original songs, Blooming, was made in a deliberately opposite way: recorded in September 2023 at Tritonus Tonstudios in Berlin, played live straight to two-inch tape with no computer anywhere in the chain, and issued on June 7, 2024 by LowSwing Records as a numbered vinyl edition and a Bandcamp download, with no CD and no streaming release. The band is Kit Downes on piano, Wurlitzer and Hammond organ, Hanno Busch on guitars, Lisa Hoppe on electric and upright bass, and Israeli drummer Amir Bresler. Morscher taught jazz and pop vocals at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln from 2021 to 2022, has taught performance training and the psychology of music at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt and yoga and performance coaching at the mdw in Vienna since 2023, and since September 2025 has taught jazz voice at MUK Vienna.

Morscher writes almost everything she sings, and the writing is what her critics single out first: Blooming's nine songs deal with self-doubt, identity and inherited family patterns, and the Austrian reviewer Peter Füssl called the record the work of an expressive, engaging voice with an unmistakable debt to Joni Mitchell, a comparison Morscher has invited herself by naming Mitchell's guitar playing and storytelling as the thing that turned her toward composing her own material. Ella Fitzgerald was the earlier model, for lightness and improvisational freedom. Her instrument is light-grained and unforced rather than powerful, and she deploys it two ways: as a lyricist's voice in the singer-songwriter format, where the band on Blooming deliberately stays out of the way, and as a wordless orchestral color, which is how Pablo Held uses her on Ascent and Adventures and how Heiner Schmitz wrote for her across the whole of Tales From The Wooden Kingdom. She has said that singing without words gives an effect no other instrument can produce. The a cappella work with Of Cabbages and Kings sits somewhere between the two; Held coined the label "Neo A Cappella" for what that group does, and the four singers use it to describe writing that leaves each of them room to remain a distinct individual rather than a section.
