Esther Jo (조에스더) is a South Korean jazz pianist and composer who has put out a trio EP, a duo EP, a first full-length album and a single since 2023. Very little has been written about her, so this profile rests on release credits, one album review, a festival listing and a few shop and database entries, and it says where those run out. Her own releases print the name Esther Jo; the Duo cover shows it that way, and the credits on her albums give it beside the Hangul. Apple Music files her as Jo Esther, and the Jarasum International Jazz Festival's English pages spell it both Jo Esther and Cho Esther, since the Hangul surname 조 is romanised either way. This profile uses the form her releases print.

Background. Her date and place of birth are not published anywhere that turned up. The Korean jazz magazine MM Jazz said in December 2023 that she was in her mid-twenties, and noted with some surprise that she had studied entirely at a music college in Korea rather than abroad. Her Bugs profile and the shop text for her 2025 album say she graduated from Seoul Institute of the Arts (서울예술대학교). A Yes24 author page under the same Hangul name gives the same school and lists jazz-club dates in Seoul (Club Evans, All That Jazz and Boogie Woogie), a spot with the school's big band at the Seoul Forest Jazz Festival, and one book, a collection of piano arrangements of two BTS songs, "Permission to Dance" and "Butter," from the publisher 그래서음악; the page gives no dates, and it is treated here as the same person on the strength of the name and school.

2022 studio videos. In August 2022 the channel WinnableMusic posted three studio performances billed to the 조에스더 quartet: "De-Dah" (August 12), "This I Dig of You" (August 13) and "There Will Never Be Another You" (August 21). The line-up in the video notes is Esther Jo on piano, Kim Dong-ju (김동주) on bass, Park Ye-in (박예인) on drums and Kim Chan-young (김찬영) on saxophone, with audio from Studio Cenacle (스튜디오 세나클). The "De-Dah" notes mark solo spots for piano, bass, saxophone and drums.

Being (2023). Her first record, the five-track EP Being, came out on October 4, 2023, as a self-production with Dongmin Lee (이동민) on bass and Seokhyun Lee (이석현) on drums. All five pieces are her compositions: "Undefined," "Weak," "Bohol" (written after a trip to Bohol in the Philippines), "Picnical" (a blend of "picnic" and "technical") and "Being," which she wrote for the people she loves. She writes in the release text that the EP was meant to put into music moments of feeling that most people have been through. MM Jazz's editor Kim Hee-jun reviewed it on December 26, 2023, praising her fluent but unforced playing, a natural swing feel with a laid-back touch, and the way solos and compositions were built with care. He singled out her solo across "Weak" and "Bohol," called the trio's interplay dense, and wrote that the EP felt as full as an album and was one of the year's important results for Korean jazz. Her Bugs profile and the shop text for her later album add that Being was chosen among MM Jazz's best albums of 2023.

Jarasum 2023. The Jarasum International Jazz Festival launched Searching for Jazzmen in 2023 with the Arts Council Korea, a programme for artists under 29 offering mentoring, festival slots and album production. It chose 12 performing teams, 3 album-production teams and 4 festival organizers. One of the three album teams was the Yoo Taekeon Quartet, which played the programme's showcase on October 9, 2023 at the festival's Welcome Post stage. The festival lists Yoo Taekeon on saxophone, a pianist billed Jo Esther, Choi Eunkyu on bass and Kim Gyoungtae on drums, calls it Korea's number-one swing quartet playing early swing and New Orleans jazz of the 1930s and 1940s, and describes the pianist, spelled Cho Esther in that paragraph, as someone who creates a variety of sounds. The page does not print her Hangul name, so her place in the quartet rests on the matching name and scene. It said the quartet's album was scheduled for release in November 2023; no such release has been found.

2024: Catch And Jab and Duo. On May 27, 2024 the saxophonist Samsu Lee (이삼수) released his first full-length album, Catch And Jab (Re-way Music & Media), and Bugs lists her as a performer on all eight tracks alongside Samsu Lee, Kim Hyun-gyu (김현규) and Seokhyun Lee; the instruments are not itemized. On August 2, 2024 came Duo, a seven-track EP with Seokhyun Lee that Melon and the cover bill to both of them (Apple Music: Seokhyun Lee & Jo Esther) on the label Mirrorball Music (미러볼뮤직). The jazz magazine Jazz Avenue's list of August 2024 releases calls it Lee's first album and says the two play every track as a duo, with the self-expression coming through free improvisation. The credits give the composition to Lee and the arrangements to both players, and the vocalist Yej Angela Park (박예진) sings on "Gloomy." The newsletter Jazz Docent, in a February 16, 2025 look back at 2024 releases, put Duo under its composition and improvisation heading as a fresh record showing that free improvisation is not so hard. Her Bugs profile and the shop text also say she appeared with Louis Nash (루이스 내쉬) in a 2024 Hanwha Life Plus performance; no independent record of that date was found.

Breakthrough (2025). Breakthrough, released on November 14, 2025 by the Sori-e Naite Music Company (소리의 나이테 음악회사) and billed as her first full-length album, is eight originals in about 52 minutes with Bruce Kang on bass and Seokhyun Lee on drums. It was recorded by Hyomin Kang at Brickwall Sound and mixed by Jiyeop Kim, with mastering by Michael Perez-Cisneros, and a CD edition sold at 25,000 won has since sold out. The release text describes the record as covering a very dark stretch of her life, the wounds she had to face, and the recovery and calm that followed, and gives short notes on each piece. "Tiqui-Taca" borrows its rhythm from a table-tennis serve; "Breakthrough" was written after she left for the United States during a hard period and takes its title from a word in the film The Intern; "Swollen Waltz" comes from a three-week American trip spent with a stye; "Ego" is about facing her own self-centredness; and "Chill Blues," the longest track at about eleven minutes, was inspired by the "chill guy" meme.

Ache (2026). On October 8, 2026 she released the single "Ache" (TSN Company), 2 minutes 42 seconds long. She composed and arranged it and plays piano and synthesizer, with Kimgihyun (김기현) on bass and EQ (고은규) on drums, and Jiyeop Kim mixing and mastering. Its note says it captures the moments of unexplained headaches and honestly shows wounds buried in childhood.

What is not known. There is no birth date or birthplace, no interview, no Discogs, MusicBrainz or Wikidata entry, no free photograph, and no confirmation that the Yoo Taekeon Quartet album was ever released. The Hanwha Life Plus date and the Yes24 page are single-source. She appears to be alive and active, with her latest single out this month.

No interview or statement of influences has been published. What the sources describe is a pianist-composer who writes mid-tempo pieces with a relaxed swing feel (MM Jazz on Being), who is comfortable improvising freely in a duo with a drummer (Duo, Improvisation#1 and #2), and whose album notes tie each piece to a personal moment rather than to a stylistic model. Bugs files Being under fusion jazz and her other releases under jazz. Her 2023 festival quartet plays early swing and New Orleans jazz, a different repertoire from her own records, and the BTS arrangement book is the one non-jazz item under her name, so jazz is her main identity by a wide margin. The Subgenres above are chosen from her own releases: mainstream jazz for the trio and quartet records and free jazz for the improvised duo tracks.
