Gautier Garrigue was born in Perpignan on December 7, 1987, and studied both drums and guitar at the city's regional conservatory, taking his jazz diploma there in 2002. He moved to Paris in 2007 and spent the next decade becoming one of the busiest drummers on the French scene, working almost entirely inside collective bands rather than as a hired hand.

Three of those bands started early and lasted. The Kandinsky Effect, a trio with the bassist Gael Petrina and the saxophonist Warren Walker, released its self-titled debut on SNP Records in 2010; Garrigue played the whole record, and Caleb Dolister took the drum chair from the group's second album onward. Clerks, the guitarist Thibault Chevaillier's band, made The Minor Fall EP in 2012 with Joachim Govin on double bass and two tenor saxophones. Flash Pig, a co-operative quartet with the brothers Adrien and Maxime Sanchez and the bassist Florent Nisse, has been his longest-running association of all: Remain Still (Plus Loin Music, 2014), Flash Pig (Nome, 2016), Year of the Pig (Nome, 2018), Le Plus Longtemps Possible (Asterie, 2023) and The Mood for Love (Asterie, 2024), five records over a decade with an unchanged personnel.

Nisse turned out to be the connecting thread through much of the rest of his work. The two are the rhythm section on the trumpeter David Enhco's records with the pianist Roberto Negro, from La Horde (Cristal Records, 2013) through Layers (2014), Horizons (2017) and Family Tree (2022); on Nisse's own Aux Mages (2014), with Chris Cheek on tenor and Jakob Bro on guitar; and on Seamus Blake's Guardians of the Heart Machine (Whirlwind, 2019), recorded in Paris with Tony Tixier at the piano. Garrigue also played the whole of the Israeli guitarist Yuval Amihai's Longing (2015) and I Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues (Fresh Sound New Talent, 2018), the latter bringing in Amit Friedman on tenor and Hermon Mehari on trumpet for three tracks, and he sat in the drum chair of the Gil Evans Paris Workshop, Laurent Cugny's large ensemble devoted to Gil Evans's writing, for the double album Spoonful (Jazz&People, 2017) alongside Antonin-Tri Hoang on alto saxophone.

In January 2016 he made the record that connects him to the Israeli saxophonist Shauli Einav. Beam Me Up (Berthold Records BHT4730025) was recorded at the Studio de Meudon on June 4 and 5, 2015, and billed to the Shauli Einav Quartet: Einav on tenor and soprano, Paul Lay on piano and Fender Rhodes, Florent Nisse on double bass and Garrigue on drums, those four and no others across all seven tracks. Pierre Durand's guitar appears on the closing "76 San Gabriel" alone. The album grew out of Sergei Prokofiev's Visions fugitives, which Einav reworked with the composer Asaf Mattijahu into a set of originals built on deliberately atonal bass lines. Garrigue took the drum chair between Louis Moutin, who had played Einav's A Truth About Me in 2013, and Guilhem Flouzat, who played Animi in 2019.

The association that changed his standing began in 2017, when Henri Texier hired him for the Sand Quintet. Garrigue has been Texier's drummer ever since, on Sand Woman (Label Bleu, 2018), Chance (2020), Heteroklite Lockdown (2022), An Indian's Life (2023) and Healing Songs (2025), plus a run of concert films for the Paris club Le Triton. On An Indian's Life he is credited as a co-producer alongside the rest of the band, and on Healing Songs he shares the drums with Manu Katché. Interviewed before a Flagey concert in January 2023, Texier called him one of the musicians who ought to be singled out for having enriched French jazz. Other long relationships accumulated in parallel: the Matthieu Marthouret Bounce Trio from 2014, Étienne Guéreau and Marc Buronfosse's co-led piano trio on So Predictable (2021), the bass-less Eric Barret Trio with the pianist Emil Spanyi on Work in Progress (Jazz Family, 2024), and the Swiss pianist Marie Krüttli's trio, whose Scoria he recorded for Intakt in January 2023.

La Traversée (PEEWEE!, October 25, 2024) was his first album as a leader, and he wrote all of it on the guitar rather than at the kit. The core quartet is his Flash Pig colleagues Maxime Sanchez and Florent Nisse with the Italian guitarist Federico Casagrande, whose own The Ancient Battle of the Invisible Garrigue had co-billed back in 2012. Ten pieces open with a three-part suite ("Lueur," "Présage," "La Traversée"); Vincent Lê Quang's tenor enters on three of them, Emile Parisien's soprano on two, and Texier guests on double bass on "Forest, Forgive Them" and the closing "Laniakea." The title of "Kenny, are you in this room?" points at Kenny Wheeler rather than Kenny Clarke, which reviewers took as the clearest statement of where the writing comes from. In March 2026 the Académie du Jazz gave Garrigue the Prix Django Reinhardt for 2025, the award it has presented to a French jazz musician of the year every year since 1955.

Garrigue is a colorist rather than a timekeeper, and the records he is on tend to be ones where the drums carry harmony and atmosphere as much as pulse: the bass-less Eric Barret Trio, where reviewers noted the deep pulse hiding in his toms and the piano's low register; Texier's quintet, where the writing is modal and open; the drifting textures of Scoria. His formal training on guitar as well as drums shows in how he writes. La Traversée was composed entirely on the guitar, and its melodic and harmonic instincts point at Kenny Wheeler rather than at any drummer, a lineage the album names outright in a track title. The other constant is his preference for standing bands over session work: Flash Pig has made five albums with the same four players over ten years, the Texier association has run for the better part of a decade, and the quartet he assembled for his own debut was drawn from musicians he had already spent years with. Henri Texier's public verdict, that Garrigue is among those who have enriched French jazz, was ratified institutionally when the Académie du Jazz named him the Prix Django Reinhardt laureate for 2025.
