A High-School Brass-Band Trumpeter Headed for Teaching, a First CD at Thirty, and the Sound of Kitano's "Brother"

Tomonao Hara was born on October 21, 1966, in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, and grew up in Chiba, where he played trumpet in his high school brass band. Jazz arrived later, at college, while he was on a path toward becoming a teacher. He went professional full-time at 23, then waited until he was 30 for a first CD as a leader, Evidence for My Music (1996). It was a late start, but a busy one: by the time he was 36, a Jazz in Japan profile counted six significant recordings and called him perhaps the most important Japanese trumpeter since Terumasa Hino. His trumpet is also on the soundtrack of Takeshi Kitano's 2001 film Brother. In 2020 he became head of the jazz course at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music. Little of his early schooling is documented in English, so this entry sticks to what two or more sources agree on.
