Neo-bop jazz emerged in the early 1980s in New York, spearheaded by young musicians often labeled the Young Lions, as a deliberate return to acoustic, hard-bop- and post-bop-rooted playing in reaction against jazz fusion's commercial dominance through the 1970s. It is marked by virtuosic, tradition-conscious playing, acoustic instrumentation, and a repertoire and harmonic language drawn directly from 1950s and 1960s bebop and hard bop. Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, along with his brother, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, were the movement's most prominent and influential figures.
