Indo jazz emerged in Britain in the mid-1960s through the collaboration of Jamaican-born alto saxophonist Joe Harriott and Indian violinist and composer John Mayer, whose Indo-Jazz Fusions ensemble combined a standard jazz quintet with a quintet of Indian classical musicians. It is distinguished by the integration of raga-based melodic structures, Indian classical instruments such as sitar and tabla, and complex additive rhythmic cycles with jazz improvisation and harmony. Harriott and Mayer's 1966 albums Indo-Jazz Suite and Indo-Jazz Fusions are considered the genre's foundational recordings.
