Kenny Wessel is a New York-based jazz guitarist and composer whose career runs through three distinct threads: a long stint inside Ornette Coleman's electric harmolodic band Prime Time, a deep, recurring engagement with Hindustani classical music, and a steady stream of leader dates and sideman work across New York's creative-jazz and CIMP-label scenes. He records and performs under both "Kenny Wessel" and "Ken Wessel," with Discogs cataloging both as name variations of the same artist (Discogs artist ID 1584445).

Wessel's most widely documented credit is his roughly twelve-year run, from 1988 to 2000, as one of two guitarists in Ornette Coleman's Prime Time, alongside guitarist Chris Rosenberg. He appears on the band's 1995 Harmolodic/Verve release Tone Dialing, credited on guitar across the album's full sixteen tracks alongside bassists Al MacDowell and Brad Jones, keyboardist Dave Bryant, tabla player Badal Roy, and drummer Denardo Coleman. During this period Wessel also performed Coleman's orchestral work "Skies of America" with Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic and with London's Philharmonia Orchestra.

Running parallel to the Coleman years, Wessel built a body of work exploring the intersection of jazz and North Indian classical music. His 1998 leader debut, Daybreak (Igmod), is a trio session with tabla master Badal Roy and bassist Stomu Takeishi, with saxophonist Tim Ries and percussionist Satoshi Takeishi added on most tracks and tabla/santur players Bikram Ghosh and Tarun Bhattacharya guesting on the closing track. Wessel returned to that vein in 2016 on a quartet record for the Norwegian label Pling Music with Hindustani slide-guitar pioneer Debashish Bhattacharya, Norwegian saxophonist Anders Lønne Grønseth, and tabla player Subhashis Bhattacharya, playing electric guitar opposite Debashish Bhattacharya's chaturangui and National Resophonic slide guitars. Wessel's cross-cultural work was formally recognized when the U.S. State Department named him a Jazz Ambassador for a 2002-03 tour of South Asia and South America, including performances in India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Venezuela.

Wessel also built a substantial catalog as a leader and co-leader on smaller creative-jazz labels. Jawboning (2004, CIMP) is a free-leaning trio session with bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Lou Grassi. The Kenny Wessel Quartet's Weights & Measures (2012, Nonotes Records), with tenor saxophonists Joel Frahm and Peck Allmond, bassist Brad Jones, and drummer Kenny Wollesen, received a four-star review in DownBeat. He released two further leader dates in 2020: Unstrung, a quartet session for Nonotes Records, and Heard Instinct, a two-guitar duo record co-billed with guitarist Bruce Arnold. As a sideman, Wessel's discography spans free jazz, straight-ahead, and pop sessions alike. On the free-jazz and creative-music side, he recorded repeatedly with drummer Lou Grassi's circle, including multiple William Gagliardi Quintet/Quartet albums for CIMP (2001-2006), Sam Bardfeld's Cabal Fatale (Taxidermy, 1999), and The Nu Band (Renual, 2022, a title that plays on the band's name; his own website lists it as "Renewal"). He appears on saxophonist David Liebman's co-billed Second Voyage with the Lewis Porter Quintet (2000) and on multiple Virginia Mayhew Septet/Quartet albums alongside trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and bassist Harvie S. He has also worked repeatedly inside percussionist Adam Rudolph's large ensembles, Moving Pictures and Go: Organic Orchestra (later Go: Organic Guitar Orchestra), appearing on releases including Dream Garden (2008, with drummer Hamid Drake), Both/And (2011), Can You Imagine... The Sound of a Dream (2011), Turning Towards the Light (2015), and Resonant Bodies (2021). Outside jazz entirely, Wessel played the guitar solo on "Security Joan" from Donald Fagen's 2006 solo album Morph the Cat. He is credited on two tracks of drummer Dave Bryant's 2024 album Wire and Bone, and on the four-guitarist instructional DVD Master Guitar Symposium, Volume 2 (2009, Mel Bay Publications), alongside guitarists Bruce Arnold, Gene Bertoncini, and Roni Ben-Hur.

Wessel is also an active jazz educator, teaching guitar and leading ensembles at Manhattan School of Music, the City College of New York, Western Connecticut State University, and Long Island University, in addition to running the guitar program at the New York Jazz Workshop. He has given clinics and workshops at Yale University and the Oslo Academy of Music, among other institutions.
