Banda Magda is a New York-based ensemble founded in 2010 by Greek-born composer, accordionist, pianist, and singer Magda Giannikou (born Magdalini Giannikou, January 27, 1981, Athens). Giannikou trained classically and in jazz at the National Conservatory of Greece and the Philippos Nakas Conservatory in Athens before moving to the United States to study film scoring at Berklee College of Music, graduating in 2008, and holding a Sundance Institute Composers Lab fellowship in 2009. She built the band out of "an international group of musicians, including some fellow Berklee alumni," drawing on players from Greece, Argentina, Japan, Colombia, France, and the United States and singing original material in as many as six languages, most often French, Greek, Spanish, and Portuguese.

The band's musical identity, a blend of Brazilian samba and forró, French chanson, Greek folk rhythms, Afro-Peruvian and West African elements, and jazz improvisation, drew it directly into the orbit of the jazz-fusion band Snarky Puppy. Bassist and bandleader Michael League signed Banda Magda in 2011 as one of the first eight acts on GroundUP Music, the label he had just launched (originally under Ropeadope Records, fully independent from 2016), alongside Snarky Puppy pianist Bill Laurance and the Funky Knuckles. League has remained a close collaborator since, co-producing Banda Magda's second album and narrating a spoken introduction on its third. Over the band's three studio albums, the touring and recording lineup drew repeatedly and specifically from Snarky Puppy's own membership: League himself on bass and guitar, saxophonist and woodwind player Chris Bullock, trumpeter and keyboardist Justin Stanton, trumpeter Mike "Maz" Maher, guitarist Bob Lanzetti, and pianist Bill Laurance as a guest on Yerakina. Percussionists Marcelo Woloski and Keita Ogawa, both prolific New York jazz session players in their own right, have been constants across all three records and remain core touring members.

Banda Magda's debut, Amour, T'es Là? (El Capitan, 2013), reached No. 9 on Billboard's World Albums chart and carried Israeli jazz bassist Petros Klampanis on double bass. Yerakina (GroundUP Music, 2014), released as a combined CD and performance DVD, was co-produced by Giannikou, League, and engineer Fabrice "Fab" Dupont, and added a second Israeli jazz bassist, Haggai Cohen Milo, alongside Klampanis. Tigre: Stories of Courage and Fearlessness (GroundUP Music, 2017) is the record that connects the band to Israeli double bassist Or Bareket plays double bass across the entire album, credited album-wide rather than on a subset of tracks, in a large ensemble that also included jazz harpist Maeve Gilchrist, Grammy-winning jazz violinist Curtis Stewart, and guitarist Leni Stern on ngoni. Proceeds from Tigre supported the World Wildlife Fund. Giannikou continued releasing music under the Banda Magda name into a leaner, largely solo-driven phase: the for spring EP (self-released, May 2024) and a string of singles running through September 2025 ("Aurore," "Terraço," "Deixa Cair," "The Shortest Day of the Year," "João," "Lua," "Tudo Isso"), none of which currently carry publicly listed personnel credits.

Beyond its own catalog, Banda Magda's music has been repeatedly selected by outside jazz curators for jazz-specific compilations rather than world-music or pop ones: a track appeared on Poland's Ladies' Jazz Album Vol. 8 (Pomaton, 2014) and again on Vol. 9 (Pomaton, 2015), on the French jazz radio station TSF Jazz's five-disc box set TSF Jazz 100% Jazz (Wagram Music, 2017), and on Universal Music Japan's Jazz Vocal Collection series (2018). Discogs classifies all three studio albums under the genre "Jazz" (alongside Pop, Latin, and Folk/World/Country tags), and the band maintains a musician page in All About Jazz's own directory.

Mainstream critics who have reviewed Banda Magda describe the band first as "genre benders," a theatrical, multilingual world-fusion act built on Giannikou's cinematic arranging and stage presence rather than as a jazz group in the conventional sense; PopMatters, reviewing Tigre, praised the album's "unique sense of over-the-top color" and "knack for aural fantasy" without framing it in jazz terms at all. The jazz case for the band rests on a different set of facts: its founding signing to Michael League's GroundUP Music, a label built around Snarky Puppy's own jazz-fusion musicians; a recording personnel drawn heavily and specifically from that circle across all three studio albums, including two different Israeli jazz double bassists (Petros Klampanis, Haggai Cohen Milo) before Or Bareket's own album-wide feature on Tigre; Discogs' own "Jazz" genre tag on every studio release; and a track record of being chosen for jazz-branded compilations by outside curators on three continents. The result is a band whose commercial and critical identity is world/chamber pop first, but whose institutional home, recording personnel, and formal genre classification place it squarely within the jazz industry's own boundaries, the same distinction this catalog has drawn for other genre-crossing artists whose connection to jazz rests on documented, dated, personnel-level facts rather than a "jazzy" critical shorthand.
