A note on the name up front: Discogs lists at least two other musicians called Matt Wilson — a Minnesota-based singer-guitarist who fronted the '90s band Trip Shakespeare, and an unrelated punk vocalist. Neither shares a discography with the drummer profiled here. Matthew Edward Wilson was born September 27, 1964, in Knoxville, Illinois, a small town he still references warmly in interviews and liner notes. He began playing drums in elementary school and went on to study percussion at Wichita State University, an unglamorous Midwestern route that put him through big-band and combo fundamentals before he ever set foot in New York. He made the move to the city in 1992, joining a scene that, in the early '90s, still had plenty of room for a drummer whose playing announced itself as different: buoyant, funny, unmistakably his own, at a time when a great deal of jazz drumming aimed for a more inward, cerebral seriousness. Before establishing his own name, Wilson spent time in the Boston-rooted Either/Orchestra, appearing on the group's albums The Calculus of Pleasure (1992), The Brunt (1994), and Across the Omniverse (1996) — his entry point into the working jazz-scene circuit that would soon bring him into rooms with far more established names.

Those names arrived quickly. Cecil McBee, a bassist with his own decades of pedigree, hired Wilson for the Cecil McBee Band and its 1996 Palmetto release Unspoken — the same year Wilson issued his own debut as a leader, As Wave Follows Wave (1996, Palmetto), which is notable for a detail that says something about how these relationships actually work: tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, a generation older and one of the most significant post-Ornette Coleman tenor voices in jazz, appears as a guest on Wilson's very first record as a bandleader. Lee Konitz became a similarly recurring collaborator: he guests on Wilson's own Going Once, Going Twice (1998), then the two co-lead Gong with Wind Suite (2002, SteepleChase) as an equal duo billing, composing and performing together across a program built entirely around drums-and-alto interplay. Wilson also turns up as a sideman on Konitz's own Strings for Holiday (1996, Enja, a tribute to Billie Holiday) and on the live New Nonet (2006, recorded at the Jazz Standard under Ohad Talmor's direction), plus a guest spot on the Grace Kelly/Konitz duo album Gracefullee (2008). Charlie Haden brought Wilson into his politically charged Liberation Music Orchestra for two albums under Carla Bley's arrangements: Not In Our Name (2005, Verve, recorded in Rome) and Time/Life (Song for the Whales and Other Beings) (2016, Impulse!), the latter issued after Haden's 2014 death, assembled from a 2011 festival performance and 2015 studio sessions. Pianist Paul Bley, another towering, idiosyncratic figure, guests on bassist Mario Pavone's Trio Arc (2008), with Wilson holding down the drum chair across a program the three men co-composed.

Wilson's own catalog runs in parallel tracks under different names, a Discogs-and-Spotify quirk that reflects how he actually works: albums billed simply to "Matt Wilson" (As Wave Follows Wave, Arts and Crafts, Honey and Salt, Good Trouble); albums billed to the Matt Wilson Quartet, the long-running working band that has featured saxophonists Andrew D'Angelo and Jeff Lederer, bassists Yosuke Inoue and Chris Lightcap, and — on 2013's Gathering Call — keyboardist John Medeski as a guest; and side ensembles under their own names, including the horn-and-vocal quintet Matt Wilson's Arts & Crafts (Wake Up!, The Scenic Route, An Attitude for Gratitude), the annual holiday trio Matt Wilson's Christmas Tree-O (formed 2009 with Jeff Lederer and Paul Sikivie, its self-titled Palmetto album a New York club tradition ever since), and the co-led piano trio Trio M with Myra Melford and Mark Dresser.

2014's Beginning of a Memory — released under yet another name, Matt Wilson's Big Happy Family, assembling more than a dozen musicians from across his various ensembles — carries a specific and personal weight: it was made in memory of Wilson's wife, Felicia Wilson, who died of leukemia that June. Felicia, herself credited as a vocalist on several of Wilson's earlier albums, is remembered directly in tracks including "Flowers For Felicia" and "July Hymn." The record received a five-star DownBeat review and closed out multiple critics' year-end lists — grief rendered, characteristically for Wilson, without losing the warmth and humor that define his music.

Honey and Salt (Music Inspired by the Poetry of Carl Sandburg) (2017) stands as Wilson's best-reviewed and most widely cited leader album: it appeared on more than thirty "Best of 2017" lists and earned the Jazz Journalists Association's Record of the Year honor, part of a year in which Wilson himself was named the JJA's Musician of the Year (2018). Good Trouble (2024), dedicated to the memory of Carla Bley, Geri Allen, Ron Miles, and Frank Kimbrough, is his most recent album as leader.

Wilson topped DownBeat's Critics Poll "Rising Star Drummer" category for five consecutive years and has twice won the Jazz Journalists Association's Drummer of the Year award, in 2003 and 2011; he also received a Grammy nomination in 2011. Alongside his performing career he holds faculty positions at the New School, SUNY Purchase, the San Francisco Conservatory, Sarah Lawrence College, and the Prins Claus Conservatoire in the Netherlands, and hosts Playdate with Matt Wilson on WBGO — a teaching footprint that matches the density of his recording career, with credits on more than 400 released recordings as leader and sideman combined.
