Jesper Bodilsen was born January 5, 1970, in Haslev, on the Danish island of Zealand — not in Aarhus, as some secondary sources (including Discogs' own artist bio) state; Aarhus is where he later trained, not where he was born, a distinction confirmed independently by both Wikipedia and his own official biography. His family had no particular musical background: the spark came at age eight, when he found an old trumpet at his grandparents' farm. The family moved to Silkeborg when he was three, and it was there, at ten, that he joined a school brass band and learned to read music. He got his first electric bass in 1984, and in 1991 he entered the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus for a five-year diploma program, graduating in 1997. That year he also received the Memorial Bursary of Edward Eriksen and was hired to teach at the Academy himself — the start of a parallel career as an educator that continues today on the faculty of Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium.

Bodilsen's formative professional relationship was with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, the towering figure of Danish bass playing, under whom he studied; multiple sources describe him as the first Danish bassist of real stature to emerge after NHØP himself. The relationship that defined his international profile began at a festival, not a club: in 2002, Bodilsen, drummer Morten Lund, and Italian pianist Stefano Bollani were all selected for the sextet Enrico Rava assembled around his Jazzpar Prize that year (released as Happiness Is..., Stunt Records, 2003). The chemistry was strong enough that the three formed a standing trio in 2003. Their debut, Mi Ritorni In Mente (2004, Stunt Records), became an unlikely crossover hit — reportedly one of Italy's ten best-selling records that year — and took the group to Birdland in New York. Gleda – Songs From Scandinavia (2005) turned toward Nordic folk and popular song, and in 2004, on the strength of the trio's early success, Bodilsen himself was awarded the Django d'Or as Denmark's "Performer of the Year." By decade's end the trio had moved to the most prestigious address in European jazz, recording Stone in the Water (ECM 2080, recorded October 2008 at Avatar Studios, released September 2009) under producer Manfred Eicher. Bodilsen's work as a leader runs parallel to the trio rather than behind it. Short Stories for Dreamers (2010, Stunt Records) was his first outing billed to himself alone, a spacious quartet date with guitarist Ulf Wakenius, trumpeter Peter Asplund, and vibraphonist Severi Pyysalo built, in his own words, around "simplicity and space." Scenografie (2013, Carosello Records) is his most ambitious leader project to date, a double-disc set combining an Italian session with Bollani, clarinetist Nico Gori, and vocalist Joe Barbieri, recorded in Perugia in December 2011, with a Swedish session reuniting Wakenius and Asplund the following January — with liner notes contributed by Enrico Rava. He also recorded two duo albums with pianist George Colligan early in his career, Twins (2000) and A Wish (2001), both for SteepleChase, and later duo and trio dates with pianists Marco Mezquida (Pieris, 2018) and Antonio Zambrini (Incontro, 2020). In 2021 he founded his own label, Mingus Records, whose catalog includes his most recent release, a 2026 duo album with Swedish pianist Lars Jansson.

Since 2022, Bodilsen's most active outlet has been Moods, a vocal-leaning trio with pianist Henrik Gunde and his longtime partner Morten Lund, releasing a self-titled debut that year followed by Moods, Vol. 2 (2023) and holiday-themed sets on Mingus Records. Beyond his own projects, he remains a first-call presence on the Danish and Nordic scene, with studio and stage credits alongside vocalist Katrine Madsen, pianist Jan Lundgren, saxophonist Benjamin Koppel, the Kasper Villaume Trio, and the "Bridges" project with American saxophonist Seamus Blake, among many others.
