Devin Roth was born on the west coast of Canada and creates a form of modern jazz shaped by rock and pop influences. He attended McGill University in Montreal, studying with Juno Award-winning pianist Jeff Johnston and Juno Award-winning composer Christine Jensen, earning a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Piano Performance. He was subsequently awarded a scholarship to the Jazz Composition program at the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he studied with bassist Dave Holland, bassist Cecil McBee, and pianist Fred Hersch, whose own career is covered in full in his JazzProfiles.com profile.
Roth is also a composer, orchestrator, and audio programmer whose work spans film and television, contributing to Guillermo del Toro's Netflix series Trollhunters, Hotel Transylvania 2, The Book of Life, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and the Emmy-nominated Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas. He has collaborated with composers including multi-Oscar winner Gustavo Santaolalla, Devo co-founder Mark Mothersbaugh, and Grammy-nominated composer Tim Davies. His debut jazz album, Childhood Places, features compositions inspired by the landscapes of British Columbia and his outdoor upbringing, including "Kettle River" and "Okanagan Mountain."
Roth's grounding in jazz composition under Dave Holland and Fred Hersch, carried forward into a parallel career in film and television scoring alongside figures like Gustavo Santaolalla and Mark Mothersbaugh, made him a genuine bridge between the contemporary jazz composition world and screen music.
